Default New Martin Slope

One of Martins new models is this DSS-17.

https://www.chicagomusicexchange.com...order/18015370

I owned a Ceo4r rosewood Martin slope a decade back, and I found it muddy, heavy, and stuffy. Dont @ me!

This new model... seems light, and it’s got sapele back and sides. Long scale, no richlite, and frankly sharp. I bet this is a fantastic guitar.

Now, I’m all taken care of... two Martins, and a gaggle of Gibsons... but if I were in the market for a neat guitar, perfect for vocal accompaniment, with no electronics, this would be tops my list, right up there with Gibsons offerings.

I can’t wait to try it. Errrr or maybe it’s better I don’t.

Yeah...if it's anything like the other current 17 series Martin's it should be very good and very reasonably priced.

I’ve been thinking that the 17 series would be a great place for Martin to offer their slope-shoulder dreadnought. Turns out I was right! I’ll bet these feel and sound great and will be a great alternative to the J-15/J-35.

I was looking forward to seeing a 12 fret original dreadnought - but this is a jumbo style, but with a Martin standard scale length(?)
Obviously challenging Gibson head on.

As much as i would prefer a short scale and a gloss top, this looks sweet.

Definitely looks like a cool guitar model. I’d like to see where these are priced in line with the J35. The J35 gives you South American Mahogany, full gloss finish and a pickup. This needs to be priced a few hundred less to be a comparable value.

There’s nothing wrong with Sapele, I think the Taylor DN3 is one of the best sounding Mahogany type dreads out there regardless of price or brand.

It’s very interesting that Martin and Taylor are both rolling out slope shoulders this year.

This is potentially my next guitar. It looks great and the price is surely right.
I'm not ready to pre-order it but when they start showing up in the stores, I'll be checking them out.

It is priced in line with their other 17 series models, which is appropriate. I would say the J-15 is the competition.

Too cool to resist. Just sent a deposit over to Ted at LA Guitar Sales for the DSS17 in black.

I was thinking a dread would be a good fit as this line doesn't or hasn't had one. But wasn't expecting it to be a slope shoulder variety? (Or Jumbo in Gibson-speak)

Wonder what else Martin has up their sleeve for winter NAMM?

Go ahead and call it a jumbo — I’m fully aware of the historical terminology — but I’m not incorrect in calling it a slope-shoulder dreadnought, nor am I alone in using the term. I’ll side with the folks actually making these instruments, including Gibson themselves.

If we’re using outdated language we’d also call this a Spanish-style guitar.
