Ditto, tobybean!

For me it was Dust in the wind, then Blackbird, then Landslide. A lot of fun to be had with those three great tunes.

BTW, I see you're from the same town as the great Dale Earnhardt. Any stories you can tell ?

Hi, Old Hacker;

The last measure of Blackbird is this:

E--------------------------3--l
B--1------1----1-----0---0--l
G------0----------0-------0--l
D--0---------0------------0--l
A------------------------------l
E----------------------3------l

I do. Been playing it for 30 years, but never in a music store. It's one of my favorite songs to play for myself.

Ah, I get this often. Yep he's from Kannapolis and our main road is Dale Earnhardt Blvd . I used to detail cars out of his dads, Ralph Earnhardt's, shop right behind his mom's house. Now we've just had Pillowtex go out of business losing 6000+ jobs this past week (i didnt work there so, luckily, i'm fine so far) so things are tough for this town at the moment and will probably stay that way for awhile. Earnhardt was a good guy (for the most part) and met him more than a few times but by the time he got big he moved to Lake Norman to play on the lake and didnt hang around this small town much. I basically take two lefts out of my driveway to get to DEI. Nascar is all around this place but I'm not into as much as most.

Cool story!

I'm sorry about your town's economic downturn.

I was under the impression that Dale never forgot his friends.

Anyway, forgive me, this doesn't have anything to do with "Blackbird."

Thanks.

My first was Dust in the Wind, but then learned Classical gas. What a great song. I have played that so long I have a combo of Mason and Eric Clapton. Tried Brent Mason's 'Hot Wired' but was tough on acoustic.

In case you guys didn't already know, Blackbird is Paul's song of hope and encouragement to black folks. In England, people are commonly called "birds," hence black bird.

Mmmmm... Actually, the term "bird" is a word used by men in the UK to describe a girl when thinking in a somewhat, ahem, carnal sense. It is insulting enough that you don't use it on "present company" without expecting consequences.

I'll direct your attention to THIS REFERENCE from the online English to American Dictionary. In case you don't feel inclined to take the word of the afforelinked lexicographer, another individual from the UK brought this to my attention as well.

Bob

Thanks Bob, I'm sure that's correct.

Perhaps McCartney was alluding to the black female persuasion, or more likely--although not grammatically correct--black people in general.

Thought forum members might be interested in the source of this fruitcake interpretation of a simple song about a blackbird (you know, the thing with feathers and a beak, very common in the British Isles): one Charles Manson. Cute, huh?

I wasn't aware of Manson having his own interpretation of "Blackbird," but he was correct that the song is metaphorical, but not about black people rising and revolting against white establishment, more like expressing sympathy and hope for a brighter future.

About a year ago, when McCartney was in concert in Massachusetts, he introduced "Blackbird" with the story behind it's meaning, and even pointed-out the word "bird" as having an alternate meaning across the pond. Unless Paul was playing a joke on the audience, how can you argue with the man who wrote the song?

For the heck of it, I did an internet search and came across this Diane Sawyer interview for ABC:

Thumbs up

And Bob, you are correct about "bird" being gender specific. My mistake. I misinterpreted McCartney's interpretation .

Well I never. That's certainly news to me. Naughty Sir Paul! So the chances are he was thinking of, say, Angela Davis when he wrote it?
