These moments happen to me on a weekly basis.

Was I a better guitarist yesterday than today? No.

I think sometimes we're not focused. Sometimes our hands are exhausted. There are many variables to consider.

Well at 63 (now 64) I made a commitment to restart lessons and really practice more. Also picked up a baritone ukulele to learn along the way. Anyways I’ve learned what I set out to learn, barre chords, bass runs, and now triads. It’s the most I’ve ever played in years. Loving my new teacher. We do in person and virtual as needed.

Being part of another art form I can tell you it's part of being an artist. It's never good enough.

I’ll stop playing, shake my head and laugh.

Sure, lots of times. I fully get where I stand in the food chain of players and if there was truly survival at stake, I’d have been eaten a long time ago. But it’s not about how good you are, it’s about enjoying making music. Anyone with three chords and maybe a scale or two can enjoy making music. I’ve been doing it on and off for well over 40 years and some days I can’t get anything going at all, but some days feel like magic. I mean, low level magic - my magical days are nothing like Tommy Emanuel’s or Jorma’s magic days. But lots of days I’m doing it well enough to enjoy it immensely. That’s all I’m playing for. So I enjoy the good days and I’m not too hard on myself about the bad ones - nothings really at stake here...

Hi OKCt

No. After 57+ years of playing I'm confident in my skills, and sober in my assessments of how well the last gig went.

I don't draw satisfaction from how well I played, but from audiences. And I enjoy just sitting and playing in a quiet room for nobody…

Sort of. I noticed there was an online video of Jorma Kaukonen playing Embryonic Journey. Oh, that's how he does it. So I gave it a try. After a short while I was super surprised that it's looking like I might be able to play this!

Well, keys are my main instrument, so it was no less than 6 months later I was able to get it into shape to make a recording of it.

Rather than feeling good ABOUT my playing, I mostly feel good WHEN I'm playing. Can't think of a time when I put my guitar down in disgust or frustration. That's because if I'm having trouble getting something down, I'll stop and play a tune that I know frontwards, backwards and sideways. Then I say to myself, "yeah, that's how it's done!". Disclaimer: I play mostly Blues originals and the covers I do, I "make them my own", so even if I'm wrong, I'm right. I'm too lazy to do otherwise.

Well, that's true! It's different than playing golf.

Rarely happens, but when and if it does, I'll "remedy" this with changing up guitars. Most nights this solves the issue!

Spot on. You know when you mess up. You know when you do fine. But the audience (whether it's one or one hundred), can tell if you're in a groove or just playing.
