Default Sunday Morning in January (updated parial capo original)

So I 'started' this piece back in 2012, on Sunday morning at the start of the new year. For many years it happily existed as a short little miniature, a regular part of my repertoire. The sad, yearning opening melody reflecting my mood at the time, as anyone who suffers from SAD (seasonal affective disorder) might empathise with. The tune arrived almost fully formed, and by the time my family had gone to church and back the piece was written.

Recently I started to think about the piece and how I might extend it. My SAD has been exacerbated in recent weeks by the crazy state of our World and the fact that the human race seems to have lost the plot! I decided to sit down one afternoon this week and try to write something that expressed my sense of fear, sadness, anger, but perhaps above all, love for the fact that most human beings are perfectly reasonable, rational entities, with good souls that don't mean harm to their fellow man; and that for some reason the people in charge of making decisions that affect us all are far from rational, and seem to have lost any sense of love and respect for the World they are supposed to be looking after.

Anyway, the middle section of this piece arrived, almost as an improvisation. I had to do very little editing to it, other than add one more bar that smoothed out one of the transitions. The beautiful Brook I play certainly helped. It was almost as if all I had to do was listen to what the guitar was whispering to me.

So here it is, my now fully complete version of "Sunday Morning in January", in CGCGCD with a partial capo at fret 3.

Thank you to everyone who has listen to my music these last 12 months. Have a great Christmas, and here's hoping that 2024 will begin to be a little less mad.

Nicely done. Meditative.

Just lovely, Robbie!! The kind of piece that takes you to another place, and it did that for me! This has a very Will Ackerman feel. You've captured a beautiful, contemplative mood....thank you!
Best,
Fred
