You can do some long, modulated tape delay patches on a good delay modeler that will out-reverb an ambient reverb.

Just an update as the OP...
All this talk about fancy pedals, etc, and what did I do? I ended up ordering a Positive Grid Spark 40! I keep seeing videos about it and it looks like too much fun. I won't have it for a few days but hopefully will get it by this weekend. I'd love to spend Sat AM trying it out.
