Default Binding Jig Bit

I hope Mark does not mind me using one of his pictures as an example. I just visited his site, talk about drooling over my keyboard. Regularly catch his builds but to see all of them at one time... https://www.hatcherguitars.com/

Back to my inquiry, I have a similar binding cutter and have been using a 1/4" down cut bit. I can see using a larger bit to be an advantage and have been looking for one. Both from Stewmac and LMI have down cut bits but they have an extended shaft for a bearing. I am guessing this extension would interfere with the dumbbell as in the picture above. I can easily get a larger non-down cut bit, or the LMI/Stewmac type. I was wondering what others use with this kind of jig?

I have a similar jig that I built myself and use a 1/2in straight flute bit. A downcut would be better but I ran into the same problem you did when looking for one from the luthier supply houses. I cut the chase and went right to a company that manufactures them and bought a nice 1/2in downcut bit but it came in with a 1/2in shaft as well. Then I left it at that.

But this serves as a good reminder for me to get a new bit.

Or the people using a straight cut bit. What diameter are you using and how is it working for you?
