Check out videos of the new DeArmond Tone Boss. I installed on in my gigging guitar and removed the JJB that was in it. A an excellent sounding Mag pickup IMO. I use a cheap Behringer ADI21 acoustic preamp.

Black Angel
Are the Black Angel's available anymore? I see out of stock at the usual places, and a used one pops up sometimes on the auction sites. I've got it in my mind I'd like to have one. I know this thread is 18 months old...

I agree, I was going to buy one but out of stock means not in production.

I have a like-new Black Angel I was just getting ready to sell. PM me if either of you are interested. I did see one on Reverb yesterday but it was from Greece! Weird that they are suddenly gone. Perhaps due to the interruption of production from COVID?

The Sunrise, IMO, killed the Black Angel in the first video, it had so much more mid body. In the second video the combo of the Amulet M and the Sunrise was GREAT! |

I've used both and I think the M1 is better and more natural than the BA solo. I used the BA with its SBT piezo brethren and blended them with a Pendulum but was never wow'd with it. The M1 is pretty hard to beat as a solo mag but I've never tried the Sunrise, which is undeniably, really cool.

I have owned the M1 passive, the M1A, and the M80.
I also use a Baggs Venue DI. My favorite is the M1 passive - go figure. If you are using another box between your guitar and the PA (Fishman stick, amp, Bose, etc), I dont think you need the extra coloring in the active pickups. |

But I know the input of the pendulum is a different than usual number like 10k or something. I think most modern pups are 1mgohm these days. |

Magnetic Soundhole pickups...
Just my two cents; I tried a Sunrise magnetic soundhole pickup a number of years ago in an Olson SJ ...never really liked it. I felt it placed too much weight on the top and inhibited the top from doing its "thing"... I switched to the Trance Amulet M in both my stage acoustics seven or eight years ago and never looked back...

I think the BA mag doesn’t produce enough bass and the BA SBT doesn’t have enough treble. You have to notch or cut bass and goose the treble on the SBT and there’s no depth to the bass on the mag. It’s not a bad duo, per se, but I think the M1 on its own offers more of all the above and the Sunrise has a nice depth that blends well with a mic or SBT. I’ll give props to the BA SBT for being pretty microphonic and the arrangement of the two being easy to install but they just don’t “wow.” I think a good UST provides better bass than most mags, including the Sunrise, but the BA doesn’t have any depth or air compared to the Sunrise: it just has a clean, stringy, sound. Again, not bad and plenty like it, but I think a mic would be needed to enhance the BA mag and SBT.

I think the Pendulum has a 10mohm impedance which is pretty standard and shouldn’t have any negative impact on anything unless it was below 500k. All pickups are a matter of taste and the BA arrangement just wasn’t for me. I’m happier with a Baggs LB6, M1, or Ovation. The BA gets complicated and I prefer something that offers more with less effort.
