Default Cold Weather Gloves?

I have thoroughly been enjoying my little street legal go cart, a Polaris Slingshot. That is, until the temperatures dropped. With the clothes I already had, I have learned to layer up on everything but my hands. When the thermometer says 38 F., with a 70% Relative Humidity, even a slow ride can have my fingers freezing in no time. Oh, I know that I could throw upwards of $250 at a pair of gloves and be toasty warm (http://www.coolphotographygear.com/heat3.html), but I am just too frugal for that, despite the Slingshot. (Being frugal is how I got it!)

I don't need all the hand armor that good motorcycle gloves provide, though even they can run $150 or more. What suggestions do you have for some great, relatively inexpensive cold weather gloves?

Default For serious cold protection:

Mittens yes, gloves no.

Default Cold Weather Gloves?

I’m perplexed.

I won’t be goofy enough to ask what you actually paid for the Polaris (I have a range!), but you’re skimping over $50-100 on a nice pair of gloves?

Buy them. Use them. Forget about it.

Mittens get my vote, too.

And even though your name is Cotten, wool is much warmer

I've got to agree with this. Guitar players need to protect their hands from the elements and from injury. I never work outdoors in summer without leather gloves. You can purchase expensive gloves for warmth in winter or purchase relatively cheap, but durable leather gloves with fleece lining for winter from places like Menards. You can also purchase thin glove liners for layering to make those gloves even warmer.

(-24 two nights ago and -26 last night. Double digit minus temps virtually every night since Christmas.)

I agree with almost everyone. Don't scrimp. Buy mittens, not gloves. Wool is great, as is Goretex. I see little reason to buy mittens that don't also offer protection against the worst parts of road rash and unexpected contact, just in case.

I've been an avid skier most of my life and had been an avid snowmobiler when I was younger.

I've been through so many gloves and nothing touches my 35 year old, worn out olympia ski mittens. I've tried to find replacements and I just cant find anything even close.

For anything above zero in situations when dexterity counts, I use Oakley tactical gloves. 30 bucks!

Hestra

Really warm gloves and mittens. I have the Army Leather Mittens with the removable liner.

Me too.
Wouldn't like to negotiate Marble Arch, or the M25 in one!

Cotten, back a few years when I worked outside for a couple of winters, as well as skied constantly, my solution to cold hands was this: A home-knitted pair of thick wool mittens inside of some cheapish leather work mittens. Best, and warmist mittens ever, and I tried a lot! Toasty!

I have been here a while, so I suspected I would receive a number of replies indicating that I am asking the wrong question, but thought it was worth a shot. Thanks, David! Can anyone else offer a suggestion for some great, relatively inexpensive cold weather gloves? I already knew that in some opinions, I bought the wrong vehicle, too. Don't care. I'm loving this thing! I just need some great, relatively inexpensive cold weather gloves.
So that is my question.

What is a Slingshot? Maybe this will help, though not the model I own:

Back when I used to ride motorcycles, I bought a pair of snowmobile mittens from the old Herter’s firm.
They were super...

I see Amazon shows several pairs for around 40 bucks.
