I think it's a split between ignorance and scams.
I think that a lot of people don't realize that by violating the user agreement, whether as buyer or seller, you can actually lose your PayPal account and be banned from the service. If it's an item that I want, and I believe that the seller is just trying to minimize the overall price and/or not pay the fee but otherwise acting in good faith, I just offer to pay it myself. If it's a good enough deal that I'm willing to buy it sight-unseen, from a total stranger, adding 3% to it isn't likely to be a deal-breaker. Keeps the deal in compliance, keeps me protected, gets the seller the price they want. And, it weeds out the true scammers, since this won't work for them. |
