Default Resources for Room Acoustics...

Can anyone suggest some good forums that are recording specific, in particular studio design and layout?

Not a forum but I was just looking at this earlier today...http://www.homebrewedmusic.com/tag/acoustic-treatment/ as recommended right here at the AGF. A pretty good resource.
Mentioned on that page was http://forum.studiotips.com/index.php which IS a forum.

Default Room Treatment Resources

Aloha Halcyon-Tinker,

Here are a few Room Treatment Resources:

https://www.gearslutz.com/board/stud...ing-acoustics/

http://www.dougyoungguitar.com/studio.php

http://www.homebrewedmusic.com/2009/...-on-the-cheap/

http://www.homebrewedmusic.com/2011/...adband-panels/

http://ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html

http://realtraps.com/art_basics.htm

https://ledgernote.com/columns/studi...nels-and-foam/

More available if required.

Just build 2-to-9 of Fran's moveable, portable, storable OC 703 broadband absorbers (per his video above) & you don't need an expensive, permanent built in studio. You can control most spaces with that. Everything you need to build these 4"x2'x4' panels is available cheaply at Walmart. The OC 703 rigid fiberglass (what all studio's use) can be ordered through an acoustic materials house. Save money! DIY.

Take control of those nasty room reflections & treat your room. Achieve the clear, full-spectrum, un-muddy & musical sounding recordings you deserve. It's the ONLY way to maximize your gear & signal chain, Halcyon-Tinker. It will make the biggest difference in your recordings, even more than any gear you buy! Treat the space before you buy the sexy stuff: mic's, monitors, preamp's. interfaces, good cables, mic stands

PM me if you have questions about how to make your own treatment.

Good Luck!

alohachris

The forums at homerecording.com are very useful, and include a 'Studio Building' section, which has been frequented in the past by people like John Brandt.

+1 for GIK Acoustics (posted just ahead of me). If you aren't interested in building your own, they offer a wide array of *tested* products that match or exceed the competition. I have their corner absorbers as well as 4x2 absorbers. Next is some diffusion. I really like this company.

I can add my name to those who are impressed with GIK. They helped me put the finishing touches on my room.

For those who DIY'ed... where did you get the insulation (Roxul rockwool, OC703 etc.)? It's not available retail, commercial suppliers may want a very large order (or not sell to you at all), if buying online the shipping cost can double the price you pay, wiping out a lot of the DIY savings.

I've found the Roxul Safe'n'Sound in Lowes. Not every one, but some. If they don't have it, I'd think they might deliver to a local store for pickup at not charge.

For the denser products, you need to find a [more commercial] building supply place that will just tack some on to an order they have with a wholesaler. You might have to go to a large city to find one that will do that, or maybe find a friend in the building trades that can place the order for you.

It's been a long time since I did my studio, but that was a major challenge at the time. I was able to order 703 from my local building supply place (a major Mom and Pop in the area), tho it was a custom order, there was a minimum quantity, and the clerks thought I was a bit crazy :-)

Now, GIK carries it:

https://www.gikacoustics.com/product...ng-703-2-inch/

and the price seems pretty good, tho shipping may add up.

I'd note that this stuff is nasty to work with. You'll want a mask and gloves at the least. I added panels later in my room made of "acoustic cotton", which ATS carries:

https://www.atsacoustics.com/recycled-cotton-batts.html

and that was a pleasure to work with. Might be a little lighter in absorption on the low end, I forget.

Frankly, unless you're on a really tight budget, I'd just buy pre-made panels from ATS or GIK - that's what I'd do if I was doing it again. Less exposure to nasty stuff, looks good, surprisingly affordable, and more time to play guitar.
