Default My great-grandfather used to say....

"You gotta look-a-look."

My father used to tell me that my great-grandfather would always tell him that as they worked together in construction. (Along with "If you were in the army you'd be killed on the first day," lol)

The former came to my mind when I picked up a $900 Washburn with a solid top and laminated b/s. The guitar looked really nice, had a nice arm bevel too. Sounded pretty good too and had a great set-up for my fingers. Then I noticed where the fretboard was not flush with the top and they filled the gap with glue.....

You could probably own that guitar for 20 years and never notice or care. I think I've been hanging out here too long,

As a Grampa now I tell all the kids "if a hammer won't fix it, it's an electrical problem."

They'll get it someday.

I love that !

Reminds me of a town motto I saw in Terlingua Tx back in 2004/5 - went something like -"ain't much cain't be fixed by dynamite".
Ah the Starlight theatre! Such memories!

I can not repeat what my dearly departed grand papy use to say on a family friendly forum. But it was always directed at folks who where annoyingly arrogant, obnoxious, racist, pig headed, stubborn, dense, mean, abusive, full of rage, foolish................

It’s funny, but at some point in my life was some (but not all) of those things.

We'd go visit my grandparents on their farm and there would always have a big spread of everything homegrown, slaughtered, and cooked to perfection. This always included at least one scratch-made pie.

My grandfather would always get a piece of pie to start his meal and when I asked if I could do that he said, "No, you'll probably be around at the end of the meal and I may not make it that long."

As a kid that always cracked me up and I think he did it for my entertainment. Miss him, too!

My dear late friend and ski buddy used to say: "Coffee leads to donuts. Donuts leads to ants".

My grandparents used to sell homes and move a lot .....almost like a hobby. In terms of getting rid of stuff, Gramp would say, "3 moves equal one fire!"

A few things my grandfather said to me when I was a kid, riding around in one of his beat up old station wagons full of tools, guns and the odd coon dog or raccoon skins:

Where are we going, Gramper? "Crazy, want to come?"

Gramper, can we get an ice cream? "What do you think this is, old home week?" (as he pulled into the diary store). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Home_Week

"I hit my finger with that blasted hammer and it hurt like the dickens" (he was a carpenter). https://writingexplained.org/idiom-d...ke-the-dickens

Later, when I was old enough to take him to his club for 50 cent drinks on Friday afternoons:

"Stop and get me some gum, we've got to go see my sister after this." She had raised him after their mother and one of the 8 or 9 kids died in the flu epidemic, and promptly became a nun when all the kids were grown. Apparently he didn't want to see her with booze on his breath--and they were both in their 80's at the time

He was a character! Spent his whole life farming, banging nails and generally raising Cain and 5 kids in the same small town, except for 4 years of agricultural school (now the state university) where he met my soon to be a teacher grandmother.

My other grandfather was much quieter, but led a very interesting life as well. He quit school at 14 to play trombone in a NYC speakeasy during prohibition, and he eventually became a refrigeration engineer with no more formal schooling. His father was a steamship captain on the Fall River Line, so he spent a lot of time rubbing elbows with high society as a kid https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fall_River_Line

I was so fortunate to know all 4 of my grandparents, and spend lots of time with them, too. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Barry!

Me, at 10, while out working with my Gramps in the bean fields: "How can we keep pickin when it's rainin, Grandad?"

Grandad: "Why don't yo do what they do in the Old Country when it rains?"

Me: "What's that, Grandad?"

Grandad: "Let it rain!".

"Don't forget your grip or get your grip". My grandfather was from New Orleans and it meant "don't forget your things or whatever you were carrying".
