Maybe this will help. My position gets close to the hiring and orientation process as well as some people leaving or getting dismissed.

In this hot job market I see managers much more willing to give people a chance and people who are changing that they've done. I'm also seeing people start in something new or even rungs down the ladder from there they were but if good, advancing quickly.

Big change might not be what you're looking for but I know we have new employees who are far better off than not employed whether it's the money or the mark it leaves on a resume. Some of our managers value seeing people take other work when they've been unemployed. There's also the opposite where computers read resumes first so it is a tricky formula.

I'm also seeing signs of people retraining and employers willing to train.

Again, best of luck.

Hi American Eagle, seems like the gods are testing you.

I am sorry to hear of your trials, and I know it seems so unfair, but we all know that life isn't.

I'm recovering (sort of) from life changing cancer treatment, which has taken my voice, my taste buds and my ability to enjoy a good drink. Things that I would have listed amongst my top blessings.

I can no longer lecture , which I loved, and I am fighting hard to regain enough voice to sing again, but know that my future won't include many full length gigs, acting, or lecturing.

But, I've had a lot of friendly support from people i didn't really know on this forum and elsewhere, as well as abandonment of people I though were close friends, well, seems I'm stronger than them.

Throat cancer wasn't
my first serious illness, I've been close to death a fair number of times and some serious experience of pain and loss.

I'm 70, and still standing, and so will you be once you've waded through the mire that currently surrounds you.

You will be stronger for it.

Keep mailing, keep us advised, and btw, clear you private messages here because you'll get a lot from friends you don't know.

All the best, a Limey picker,

Make sure you have a professional look at your resume. A bla resume will get zero attention.

Network! Post on all the recruitment sites. Knock on doors. Get out there.

Just tuning in to wish you well and encourage you to hang in there. Hoping things start to change sooner than later.

It is important to know a bot (computer, software) might be reading your resume before a human. Now a lot of smaller firms have outsourced HR services so even a smaller or family owned business can have resumes and reports arriving electronically from a service.

Well, 2019 is off to a horrible start.
Yesterday I spent hours in the emergency room
after a major panic attack, and this morning I got fired from my job.

I wish I could offer some pearl of wisdom or encouragement Eagle. I don't know you but I wish you peace, health and a return of joy to your and your son's lives.

If this is hard for you it most surely is hard for your son as well. Our kids are used to us being the steady ones who keep things going. Talk with him often. Spend time together doing something fun or useful - cooking, playing games, playing guitar...reassure him that you'll both be ok and you are both strong and worthy people and deserving of love, life and joy.

One door may open as another closes in the job market, and it’s certainly a good one right now, but I can tell you from personal experience that age discrimination, although illegal, definitely exists out there. They can’t flat out ask you how old your are, but it doesn’t take Einstein to look at someone’s resume and connect the dots for a fairly accurate esrimation of the applicants age. But try proving it.

Default Maybe try this

Sorry about your predicament. I was in a similar position in 1990. I hadn’t been let go yet, but knew it was just a matter of time.

I was in the computer field. I heard about a position at a Community College that paid much less than I was making but had good benefits. I decided to go for it, partially to cover my butt, but also because it would be much less stress. Fortunately I was successful and was hired by them. I spent 25 years working for the college and worked my way up from a lab tech position to teaching on the Faculty. Best career decision I ever made!

Sounds like a similar move might be possible for you.

Good luck.
Joe
