Default The Reach

Here's the fingerstyle arrangement of Dan Fogelberg's "The Reach" that I've been working on. This is performed on a Taylor 326e 8-String Baritone and arranged in Open G.

UPDATE: I've re-recorded this using some suggestions from the "RECORD" forum. Sounds much better, I think. It will have to do until I get a condenser mike.

UPDATE TO MY UPDATE: I've removed this track from Soundcloud since the recording was so terrible.

You did well with it. Very unusual sound though.

Thanks, Derek. Could you elaborate on what you mean by "unusual"?

Lovely playing! And that guitar sounds awesome.

Distant, hazy, echos
If that is your aim, then fine.

Thanks...no, that's not my aim, just my awful recording technique.

I listened to some of the pieces you've posted, and am blown away with the natural sound and presence you achieve. I've yet to figure out how to come within a country mile of that with the room and equipment that I have, but hopefully I'll get better at it.

Thanks, Herb. I take that as a great compliment after hearing some of the beautiful pieces you've posted.

I agree with Derek. You played it well.
Distant-I think I'm hearing chorus and reverb.
Echos in the ear. Still, that may be what you're going for.
But I hear it too.

Mark

Edit: Ahh! I understand the recording is a bear. I'm no good at it either! Carry on. Lol.

Browse through the Record section of the forum. Describe what you record with and how. You will likely get some good feedback.

A little reverb, but no chorus, but listening to it again, I see exactly what you mean.

Thanks for the advice! I'm off to the Record forum to get some suggestions on how to improve my recording technique.

Hi JM,

Very nice -- that sounds really good! Thanks for sharing! I like the sound of that baritone Taylor.

Good job. I always liked that tune. Of course, I tended to like everything Fogelberg did...

Thanks for your input, everyone. I've put up a new version that I hope sounds substantially more natural than the one I posted last night, thanks to some help from the folks over on the "RECORD" forum, and I've edited the original post to reflect the new link.

Thanks, Glenn. I'm really enjoying that 8-String, it's a really nice instrument.

Beautifully played and sounds great to me JM!

I would agree with Kerbie about Fogelberg's stuff. I was a fan of his first few records, saw him live in some small band/solo settings, and then kind of drifted away when he had some commercial success and his recordings became "overproduced" (in my opinion). My mistake. I'm revisiting his music and really liking what I hear. It was a shame to lose him. Kenny Loggins is another guy who falls into that category for me.
