Finish crack Taylor 610e
Hi all,
I recently bought a Taylor 610e. The guitar has a “crack” in the finish. At least that is what I think. Can you let me knie: - is it indeed a crack in the finish or in the wood? - is it ok to leave it like this or should it be repared to prevent further damage? - is it possible to get it fixed cosmetically? So it won’t be visible anymore. Bougt it with a huge discount knowing there were a few marks. Thnx in advance for the responses. [/IMG] Last edited by barth1234; 12-22-2018 at 06:54 AM. |

I know nothing about guitar repair but to me when you zoom in on picture it just looks like a surface scratch in the clear coat.
Taylor is known for great customer support so I would start there for guidance/advice.

I'm no expert at all, but to me it appears that the mark runs at an angle to the grain of the top. I would think a crack in the top would run along, or parallel with, the grain.
For that reason I think this is a finish scratch or a scratch underneath the finish on the wood surface rather than a crack.

If it really bothers you, get in touch with Taylor and ask them about repairs. They are famous for fantastic customer service.

So if I understanding correctly: no strucural damage or something that has to be repaired?

That doesn't look like a finish check to me at all. Looks more like a small scratch. Either way, it won't hurt the guitar one bit.

That's a scratch not a crack.
Taylor uses UV cured polyester finish which is not a simople repair, but that could be rubbed out pretty easily and maybe even drop filled if it needs it (I would use flexible CA) - it is so minor a pro could blend it in easily.

Tried to polish it away, but that didn’t work unfortunately.

I would leave it and learn to just love it as as a part of your guitar. If you play it, other marks will happen.

I think the same thing whenever I see threads like this. Maybe it's because I gig with my guitars but I wouldn't even notice a scratch like that. If you take any guitar out on the road for even a week, it'll have worse.

Tis but a scratch...
Leave and love it or have it buffed out by a shop. |

Hi Howard,
I’ve read a lot of your posts om this forum. Thnx for your response. Normally I can polish a scratch away with some scratchremover (eternashine). This doesn’t work for this one. As a specialist, you know for sure a good shop can make it go away/less visible? Love the guitar, but always have some heartache from the first scratch... |

Needs a bit of sanding and then a good buff. Any shop with a buffing arbor should be able to take care of it.

All the scrathes were fixed by Taylor in Amsterdam. Didn't know they had their Europe office in The Netherlands.
Verry happy with it. They also did a setup and de neck angle was adjusted. It plays good. At home I saw the following: I can see some "unpainted" wood beneath the fingerboard. See picture. Is this normal? Don't mind seeing it, just want to know if it's ok. Thnx in advance |

BTW, it indicates an equal change in scale length (increased by 2mm?). Not sure if that is OK; check the intonation. Last edited by JonWint; 01-04-2019 at 11:41 AM. |
