Default Just a concidence?

Nothing intentional, but this September when I bought my Tacoma, my daughter was moving out of Tacoma to Seattle. I really enjoyed my visit to the Grit City while she was attending college there.

I commissioned a Kostal for a birth year guitar in honor of our daughter last year:

I suppose many builders would build a custom guitar and designate it with any numbers or letters you wanted, for the right price.

I recently retired....and got another job.

I guess I didn't retire correctly.

Anyway, I got myself a retirement/unretirement/Christmas present.
A National 14 fret Style O.
I've wanted one for about 35 years or so.

Nice!

The cool thing is that I will also be finishing my MBA when I'm 35, so that makes 35 extra special for me.

I think I'd actually be doing myself a disservice by limiting myself to a D-35. Perhaps the better course of action is to save and just see what strikes me in the coming year. I really only want 3 guitars, and they are all wildly different. I of course would like a Martin dread, but I also want a Gibson ES-335 or a Goldtop Les Paul.

Right now I'm finally getting back into electric guitar which is kind of cool. I have a LP and a Strat, but I think I need an ES-335...

I can justify and rationalize an electric guitar purchase with the best of them. Milestone is just another in a long line of those.

The significance is really up to you. Age isn't my thing. I'm 56, but feel like I'm 30. I have some really nice guitars, but the guitar that means the most is my Takamine from 1979-ish, which I got in my junior year of high school (I think), made it through college, my first marriage and was key to courting my wife of 20 years. So when I turn 60, I won't be buying a guitar to mark that milestone. But if turning 35 is meaningful to you, and you wish to commemorate that with a D-35, go for it! Only you can decide whether that specific event is worth noting, and whether or not the importance will remain.

Cool story!

I don't think it is as much about turning 35 as it is trying to create or fabricate a meaningful guitar purchase. I've only had 2 meaningful guitar purchases in my entire life. The first was a John Mayer strat, which was my first expensive strat and a guitar that was in a few of my daughter's baby pictures. I stupidly sold it, and deeply regret it. The second was my Les Paul that I bought with my daughter last year on the 4th of July. It was an impulse buy at Sam Ash and it caught our eye at the same time because it is Iced Tea finish, and her favorite drink is Sweet Tea.

Those moments have sort of made me stop and think that the feelings surrounding our guitars are just as important as the sound they make. I guess I'm "hoping" that if I get a nice acoustic at 35, perhaps it can be my personal fountain of youth? Ok, I'm being dramatic, but you get the point...

I bought myself a new Lowden as my retirement gift to myself - it seemed like a reasonable excuse!

I bought two "nicer" guitars around the same time both of my sons were born, my beloved Heritage 575 (archtop) and a Godin Grand Concert Duet Ambiance (electric nylon string)

And I'm probably done buying "nicer" guitars now until they're out of the house!

If I'm really honest about it, I feel far more sentimental about my Bourgeois, which was my first good guitar, and which I bought when I was living in Maine.

Lots more good memories associated with that guitar playing with friends and a few fairs, festivals and farmers markets along with a few gigs here and there, and learning a lot on it.

I haven't made nearly as many memories with the Martin, even though I bought it as a commemoration.

The Podium had several custom Martins made for their 50th anniversary.

I bought (used) three of them (I think maybe there were four?) when I turned 50.

Harp guitar for my 50th birthday. I made decision to wait until I was 50 about 12 years ago when there were fewer options and higher prices. Fortunately at lot of options started opening up a few years ago. They are reasonably affordable now for anyone who wants one.
