I've got a Ditto. It's a great inexpensive looper to get started with.

For a 1 switch looper, Boss RC-1, it shows where you are in the loop in a circle of leds. You have to double hit the switch to stop

For a 2 switch looper, 1 of the switches is dedicated to stopping the loop, the EHX 720 is a good one.

I use both of the above.

I use a Ditto X2 because I like a dedicated stop button. Has worked pretty well at gigs for me. There are definitely fancier loopers out there but I like the simplicity of the Ditto X2. Plus, I do basic looping, either a rhythym part for some lead playing, or laying down a basic beat by slapping the guitar.

Loopers are like forbidden fruit to me. I think I have bought four (and returned three). I love the idea…but the execution is a challenge. My view is that a two button looper is a must - double tapping a button is something to avoid in my view. I also decided the built in drum tempos over-complicated what should be a simple device. A looper is basically a digital recorder, which allows storage of multiple tracks.

So as of a week ago, I have number 4, which is an EH 720, and so far, I think it is a keeper. You can store 720 seconds of recording either in one track or split among ten tracks. No drums tracks to worry about. Now, if I can only get my timing right…I think it will be a valuable tool, even If I use it only to practice (and hopefully improve) my timing.

Default Basic looper

My main recommendation is get a ‘2 button’ looper. That way you don’t have to do a double tap for basic functions, which is hard to do with good timing. This is easier to understand once you’ve tried it.
I like the Ditto x2 best for a standalone looper. It has functions I do not use ( such as variable tempo) but it’s solid and easy to use as a basic looper.
Two other things make the Ditto X2 my favorite. It has a ‘loop volume’ knob, and a switch for choosing whether it goes to overdub first or play first, after initial recording. These are very welcome additions.

Get a looper with a dedicated stop button, especially if you are just starting out.
Ditto x2 or EHX 720

New $140-$180
Used $100-$140 approx

Many loopers, like the RC1, will accept a auxillary foot switch with one or two buttons so you have a dedicated stop switch and well as another secondary function.
They can be purchased, or you can make your own if you are handy. See the example of my home brew switch here:

I have a Digitech Jamman 2-pedal looper posted in the agf classifieds.
It has great feature set, yet is simple to use.

I’ve used a Ditto X2 for years. Very simple to use and zero issues. I use it regularly on gigs.

I've been using the Boss RC 300 for the past 5 years as my main looper but just recently wanted to downsize for a bit so I bought the Lekato 9 track single button looper for $50 on Amazon. This has a tuner and a track indicator light showing where you are in the loop which is very helpful. I'm not a fan of any double tapping to stop as mentioned above but I found a blue tooth aux pedal with two buttons which allows me to press one button to stop. The auxiliary pedal was $25! So I'm in to it for less than $100 and I'm very impressed with the capabilities of this little unit. I'm trying it out tomorrow night at my gig.

Let us know what you end up getting.
