Pao Rosewood (which is not pau ferro). It's an African wood. Bourgeois is the only builder I know of that currently uses it.

Australian Blackwood. Sorry, but "Tasmanian Blackwood" sounds "Moon Spruce" pretentious to me, given that it grows all the way up the eastern Australian coast from Tasmania through Queensland. Great sounding tonewood. (I have two guitars with it)

It's the one on the right, an '81 Guild D-46. My all-time favorite guitar.

I definitely know what you mean. I know we've talked about it before, but I'll mention it again, my friend's D46 is still the best sounding acoustic I've ever played. If yours is anything like his and I'm sure it is, you've got something special with that swamp ash Guild. My friend has had his since the 80's and will never let it go and I don't blame him one bit. I've tried to buy it several times, but now don't even bother. I just enjoy getting to play it.

I've got to go with Madi Rose followed by Cocobolo with African Blackwood a close third.

One interesting note regarding the Guild D-46: many of them were built with a strip of rosewood running down the back at the center seam. Seems that Guild had numerous swamp ash sets that weren't quite wide enough for the dreadnought back, so they would splice the rosewood in there to widen the set. This rosewood strip could be anywhere from 1" to 3" or so.

It's been a long time since I've seen a D-46 up for sale, and an even longer time since I've seen one with the rosewood stripe. Those with the stripe were quite striking, although I wouldn't trade mine for one. It was just the sort of thing that made you look twice.

That's interesting, the one I get to play has the rosewood stripe, so I guess those are even more rare. I was wondering why yours didn't have one. I've seen D46's come up for sale only a handful of times. They actually sale for a reasonable price. I think it's s combination of them not making a lot of them combined with people that have them are hanging on to them.

Wow, I just did a quick search and saw this thread from 2 years ago.Whoever got that, got a smoking deal. I wish I would've saw it back then.

As others have said, Macassar ebony both sounds and looks great. Not sure how plentiful it is, though. It's an Indonesian wood and not as scarce as African ebonies but lots of tropical woods seem to be moving to a protected status.
