Takamine and Koa
I saw on of these for sale, locally.
http://www.takamine.com/guitars/archive/f370sk/ I have to assume it's a laminated Koa, but how does it effect the tone of the guitar ? Or... is it just a fancier looking Tak. Based on the low model number, is this not one of their better models ? What would be a reasonable price to see it selling for ? Waiting for any of the Tak fans to chime in.

I'm not sure about that model. I did play a newer model, all Koa c/e ( dont recall the number) two days ago at GC and was not too impressed with the tone or action. An EF model, (not Koa) they had on hand was far superior in tone and playability. It was about twice the price at about 1500. However I did but a used Alvarez/Yairi spruce over Koa ( laminated back and sides) that sounds and plays just beautiful. Like someone once stated here, sound is btw maple and mahogany. I think thats about right. Perhaps the model you are looking at is a better design.

I bumped into your old post. If this is still useful.
I have an '81 F370SK. The koa is definitely eye candy, but lacks some tone. I don't think that is the fault of the kola itself (not is a hard wood and likely would have a tone much like maple) so much as its is because it is laminated. I like mine generally for daily playing, but my Martin HD28 is my sound machine. I see the 370SKs for sale from time to time for about $800. |
