I would not call it a fake by any means. It is comparable to the Schoenberg recording king series that were designed and overseen by Lowden (although periodically)I read about this years ago and They seem to be very fine guitars. Unfortunately, that is a hefty price tag for something that did not come out of the "Emerald Isle".

'Lowden' guitars were made in the S. Yairi workshop in Japan, under George's direction, for a while during the '80s. I suspect this is one of those.

I don't know about the Lowden connection, but Kazuo Yairi (RIP) was the original master luthier. Sadao Yairi came after, and his guitars are generally not as "coveted" as Kazuo's, AFAIK. As I said, throw in the Lowden connection, and I don't know if that still holds. Kazuo's association with Alvarez were apparently some of his best.

. . . and that appears to have a couple of cracks in the side (or am I mis-seeing that)?

Sure looks that way to me. Even without the crack, they're asking way too much. You might expect to pay that for an older Lowden from the shop in Ireland.

The Yairi made Lowdens have a good reputation (though personally I've not played one), but not at over twice what it's worth.

After sitting in its case for some months as I fiddled with newer acquisitions, I took out my K Yairi today trying to convince myself that as the 2nd cheapest guitar in the brood (after the $50 Goodwill store Yamaha), it could find its way onto the classifieds to free up room for another build.

Nope - keeping it, and mentioned to the Mrs for probably the 20th time how happy I was I lugged it all over Japan before bringing it back on the plane.

I really enjoy playing it and it sometimes/often makes me wonder if I'm nuts to spend what I do on the luthier guitars.
