Default Rodgers Tuning Machines--Modern/Vintage Beauty!

I received pictures of the tuning machines from Rob Rodgers today.

First, here is a picture of an old set of Baker tuning machines with similar styled buttons. You'll note that the guitar in the picture also has a black painted neck and the similar style of slotted headstock as on the Lowlander that Tim is building. I wanted to create a set of tuning machines that were "inspired by" these old Bakers:

and below are the Rodgers tuning machines for the Lowlander:

The plates are nickel silver, brass shafts with low profile pips (no spherical finials on the top and bottom like Rob typically uses on classical guitar tuning machines).
I should also note that the nickel silver has a satin finish and the engraved areas are polished to create a more vivid contrast. Rob also offers the nickel silver plates in a much more shiny, fully-polished finish than the satin finish you see here.
The buttons are a special in-house formulation of ivoroid in their "Traditional" pattern, similar to the buttons on the Baker set above. The string rollers, which you can't see here, are chrome to match the nickel silver.

Cutting for the sound port never fails to amaze me. The idea of key cracks scares the heck out of me though, so I often wonder what type of backing is best to use when cutting? I also love the idea of inlaying a separate piece for visual contrast. Does it come out for easy pick retrieval?

Schweeet sound port! Never seen one installed after finish applied. I imagine more finish work is coming.

Dennis, you might see this one at the McJam! If the owner is here he might let you play it. If he isn't - we can still let you peek at it.

I should know more this week but the tap tone of the sound box has me giddy with anticipation. It is very intriguing and sounds like a piano with the sustain pedal to the metal.

Default Finishing the Fretboard

Tim has officially strung up the guitar today!

First, finishing the fretboard. Again, this is an African Blackwood fretboard, so you'll notice that it has that characteristic deep chocolate brown color.

Covering the fretboard with chalk. This helps show any low areas as he does a final sanding to even it out.

After the first sanding.

Cleaning the wood dust out of the fret grooves.

Prepared for frets!
