6-digit serial number for CA Crown of Thorns?
On the sticker inside my COT, the serial number is 510158 and the city of manufacture is Lafayette, LA. The serial number is written in silver sharpie on a black field. This format does not seem to conform with the other CA guitar inquiries I have seen posted. I suppose this means mine is a pre-Peavey model? Is that a good thing? I don't plan to sell it, and the only problem I have had is that the thin black binding was loosened by heat when I was playing an outdoor gig. I used wood glue to put it back down, but wondered if that was the right solution.

First, welcome to the forum!
Are you the original owner? If so, or not, when did you get it? I believe Peavey took over CA sometime in 2010. I believe quality control problems happened with some CA guitars in '09 and '10 that mostly affected neck angles, so as long as yours has no issues there, it shouldn't matter under which ownership it was made as to whether your guitar is good or not. Fwiw, my '08 pre-Peavey Cargo has an oval sticker in silver with black text that says "CARGO" (so obviously a sticker made just for Cargos), "Handcrafted in the U.S.A.", and a handwritten serial number which may be in black ink, but because the numbers appear to be faded it's hard for me to tell what the serial number actually is, or how many numerals (possibly 7). As for the binding problem, I suppose if the wood glue seems to be holding fine, then I guess it's ok. Being CF, I probably would've tried another type of glue, maybe for plastics. Hope this helps some.

Thanks for your thoughtful answer, Tom. I am not the original owner, but there are no neck issues as far as I can tell. But then again, I'm not the primary guitar player in my duo. In fact, I don't think we even bothered to set it up!

tc, you likely know that your CA doesn't have a truss rod, so the only set-up you can do, which certainly could improve playability and tone, is saddle and nut adjustments.

Yes, and yes. Mine (from 2004) also has a six-digit serial number written in Sharpie.

Your guitar is pre Peavey, and there is definitely nothing wrong with that. I am curious about the "binding" coming loose because as far as I know CA never used any binding. Do you have a photo of this you can post? |

Now that it has been repaired, I doubt it would photograph well. The binding is an extremely thin strip of black plastic that is completely flush with the neck and runs the entire length along the top and bottom. It had been placed with double-sided tape that the heat had loosened. It did not interfere with my playing, but it did give me a shock to see it . I doubt it matters at all if it is even there, the whole thing being carbon fiber.. I set it back down with a tiny application of wood glue. If it comes up again, I'll just remove it entirely.

Well, I wrote to Peavey to see if they could look up my serial number, and this is what they said:
"From: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, June 7, 2017 3:35 PM To: TC Smythe Subject: RE: CA Crown of Thorns serial number lookup TC, This is a pre Peavey CA, I am sorry but when Peavey purchased the company in 2012 we only have material and data on units made from that day to present day. Yep I got essentially the same message when I called them about my 2004/06 (not entirely sure hahaha) it sucks because information on the pre peavey's seems to now be just flown off into the ether never to be seen again.

MY GX has a serial Gx109245-3 which means (from memory) 1-High Gloss, 09 - year it was built, 245 Julian Date (September 2) and 3 is the build number for that date.
So maybe 510158 is 5-COT, 10-year of build (doesn't seem right...wasn't that after they closed?) 158-June 10.

They were at the 2010 winter NAMM show, and closed down suddenly shortly thereafter - maybe three months later. So CA was probably fully shut down by June. Or perhaps finishing up a few incomplete guitars. Hmm?

By that measure mine was built eight years after I bought it.

Yes, they were at Winter NAMM 2010, in fact we actually bought out the booth that year. Got the call March 1st that they are closed as of that day. I believe they shipped finished guitars that week, and that was that.
