Helping a neighbor learn a cute little tune… I think Toby called it, "Fingerpicking Blues in A."

I'd suggest practicing getting a good, loud, tone on your bass strings alone for a few minutes each day using what you're used to... your bare fingers.

The folks that I know who use a thumb pick and their fingers are really using their nails on those fingers to balance the volume with the bass notes.

I just bought Toby's "A Pack." I haven't had a chance to fool around with it yet so I will make sure to post some impressions later tonight or tomorrow.

I really like the concept of learning the blues one key at a time. I know a lot of blues tunes/techniques/licks in E but not nearly as many in the key of A so it will be good to expand my knowledge of my favorite genre in that key.

Default Toby Walker's Lessons: Let's Discuss!

Just bought the new "G" pack and am having a blast with "Key To The Highway" in drop G tuning. What a treat. I highly recommend this pack. Thanks Toby!

I just ordered Toby's "finger picking freedom" two dvd set from Homespun. I'm looking forward to working on it.

I got tempted by Hot Tamales so I'm working on that. I like the slightly jazz feel of it.
Trying to play it with finger picks was a struggle as I usually strum down with the backs of my nails so I'm trying to get the tempo even with two thumb pick strums as you use in the video.

As you use a thumb pick and fingerpicks it certainly would be beneficial to learn how to strum with those on. You'll have more options for putting variety in your playing that way.

I am woodshedding on the new G Pack (when not playing classical). Dropped G tuning is a real treat to play "Key To The Highway." Tried it with a thumb pick today on my Recording King ROS-06. Wow.

Glad you like that one! I thought it would be a lot of fun to teach that one in a key other than E, which is what it's normally played in.

I never thought about playing it on a classical guitar. Must have a cool sound to it.

4 more days to the end of busy season, then its time for me to jump back into TobyWorld. I bought the two "Fingerpicking Freedom" dvds and I have the E pack and the A pack. Now I can't decide what to work on first! I think I'm might go with the "Freedom" stuff first.

WOW,
this thread is BIG!!

Started by Blueser100 in July 2013,
has just shy of 500 posts,
and has 33 pages!!

Speaks to the popularity of the blues in general and Toby Walkers instructional prowess in particular.

Pretty cool I think.
My threads tend to fizzle out with just a few posts, but this one has certainly struck a chord, so Blueser, you are my hero!
And Toby, you too for your consistent checking in with folks, as a good mentor would do.

AGF is alive and well.

I hate to close this thread because it has been so successful, but as I stated in this thread started by woodbox http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/f...=1#post4453260 when threads go over 300 posts they start to get hard on the AGF servers.

However, anyone is welcome to start a PART 2 of this thread in the PLAY section, if you would like.

Thanks to all -- this has been a really great thread. And kudos to Toby for being part of it!

- Glenn
