Looking special Tom. I'd say we are still neck and neck.
What type of wood has Steve/Ryan used for the bridge plate?

According to Ryan, "Padauk is very hard and rings musically. It's a great bridge plate". Also, sort of interesting, we now have woods from North and South America, Europe, and Africa. Now I need something from Australia and Antartica and I will have them all (at least if you go with the current theory of 6 continents instead of 7 as many now combine Europe and Asia into one since they are the same land mass....and it works for my arguments)... Now what kind of wood or material can we get from Antartica....that might take some thought. |

Thank you John, as Nemoman said, it's moving right along now....
Here are a couple of more pics, the first show a very simple, but effective device the boys use to sand the back of the rims to a spherical shape...the guitar is anchored in the jig and then the sanding block is arched as well as the sides that it rides on. Just sliding it back and forth until there is no more wood coming off ensures a standard arch....simple and effective.... The second pic is of the bottom linings being glued in. Hey Tom, actually the back is cylindrical, while the top is spherical.
Small detail, but different construction approach. Say, we can put some Indian rosewood in there for continent #5. And then, perhaps some ice from Antarctica...? Steve |

I am thinking there must be something laying around the shop from Australia....ice is tough, not really going to wear well....maybe there is some sort of rock from there we could use as the logo inlay??? Indian rosewood pegheads??? |

To be fair I gave the bad info, anyone know the correct term for a curved cylinder? The back would strictly be a cylinder if it didn't have the side profile arc. Whatever the inside outer curve of a torus would be called is what we have or a guitar back shape. I'll contemplate curvilinear geometry for the next couple of days, I'll let you know when I get back from the beach.

We do have some bits of Aussie timbers around here.
Tiger Myrtle, Blackwood, Jarrah, Wandoo, Cheesewood, Q'land walnut, even something called Tulip Satinwood. We'll put something inside for geography's sake! Steve |

I did look online for something I could purchase from Antartica and there really is pretty much just ice. There has been limited geological work even done there as they have to drill through so much ice to even get to rock.... |

My smart son says it is a combination of an ellipsoid and a trapezoid ie. a trapezoidal ellipsoid.
Correction: The consensus seems to be it is simply an ellipsoid. that is my final answer, and yes, I had to use my lifelines to reach this point Last edited by TomB'sox; 07-18-2015 at 05:15 PM. |

Here are pics of some bridge work.
The first is the BRW bridge blank: The next is the drum sander being used to make the correct shape: Finished shape, carving still needs to be done: Looks pretty tasty to me!! Thanks for following along. |
