Not to diminish the advice given by the other wise folk, but I tend to do thing the other way around, because I only took up guitar to accompany the singing - for me the singing and "selling" the song/telling the story is the priority, and the guitars is merely the "backing."

Yeah we are guitar nerds and we want to get our guitar arrangements righ, but, I'd suggest that learning to sing the song, convincingly with the most basic chord changes, then when that's down, add in your bass runs, hammer-ons/pull-offs and variations but using your vocals as your anchor.

Just a thought.
