Default Kirk Gibson's Walk Off HR in World Series

This showed up on ESPN today - this day in 1988 Kirk Gibson hobbled up to the plate and hit the pinch-hit walk-off HR in the World Series. I still have that baseball card.

Anyone else remember this? Kirk could hardly round the bases.

I lived in Michigan as a kid and knew of Kirk Gibson as a football player for Michigan State and then as a speedy power hitting outfielder for the Detroit Tigers. I was always a fan.

I didn’t follow him much when he left Detroit, but I was excited to see him hit that HR for the Dodgers and stunned to see him barely able to round the bases after being known for his speed as a younger player.

Words fail here. One of the great calls from my favourite baseball announcer, Brooklyn's own, Vin Scully! I remember it well. Enjoy!

Very similar story here - we must be close to the same vintage.

Grew up in MI, more of a football fan, but Gibson was everyone’s hero.

Went to Thanksgiving Day Lions games, unfortunately got stuck as a Lions fan to this day, lol.

I remember it. My dad was a big Dodgers fan. I still hear about Sandy Koufax every year. I did a book report on The Boys of Summer by Roger Kahn and another report and speech on Jackie Robinson. I could go on and on about Dodgers history. Haha. So the World Series was definitely on in our house. That single moment was about as dramatic as they come in sports. And the incredible thing about it was that even though it came in game one, it was as if the Series was over after that.

I've been lucky enough to see KG play in both a Tigers uniform at (the old) Tiger Stadium and in a Royals uniform at (then) Royals Stadium.

A class act and a great ball player. His HR as a Dodger was really something special, and Vin Scully's call made it even more so.

Might be my all-time favorite sports moment!

He hit a back door slider which the book on Eckersley said he always went to on a 3 and 2 count. Why not a heater? Gibson could hardly stand up, let alone turn on a fastball.Baseball is a very superstitious game and I guess they had to go with what the scouts said. But it made a better movie. Gibson was waiting on that pitch and they gave it to him.

Remember it well - It's almost as if Gibson was channeling Roy Hobbs in "The Natural".

Yep. I remember seeing that play. Great sports drama. One of the two most memorable plays of that era. The other being George Brett charging out of the dugout after the ‘pine tar’ home run.

Always got a kick out of seeing Tommy Lasorda running out of the dugout to celebrate. It was an epic shot.

I watched Kirk play at Spartan Stadium quite a few times.

Definitely saw the HR that day.

We are lucky to have him commentating for the Tigers - really like his style. Sad to see his Parkinson's taking over.

Still got a great sense of humor though (I posted this here when it came out - but here it is again!) He and "The Coop" are pretty good buddies.

My dad scored some tickets to that game and took me to the game. It was a prceless experience.
I now sit and watch the the current Dodgers implode in the NLCS. A bus load of Gibbsons won't save the Dodgers this year.

Default yup

The look of shock on Eckersleys' face was priceless.
