Thank you Paul. It should really come together well. I am really excited to see the top when treated!

Ben worked on the rosette today and made a nice neat Snakewood diamond to be inlayed at the 6 o'clock position of the musical clock (bindings are snakewood). Ben's motif is beauty in simplicity (I just made that up, he can correct me if he chooses), I think this rosette nails that idea quite nicely. And for those following closely, the top has not yet been transformed, that will be done just before finishing....

As MikeAlpine mentioned in his Edwinson thread, these luthiers are just great to work with. I think for me the fingerboard inlay (or not) is the design element I struggle with the most. Mike mentioned several calls and changes to whatever design he and Steve are working on which is promised to be revealed shortly.

Ben and I had no fewer than 4 conversations yesterday regarding this very thing. He was kind enough to do several mock ups to appease my imagination only to determine that all my ideas stink hahaha. So now after wasting a day of Ben's time, we are back to ground zero and yet he is able to pretend that he does not hate me!!! Now that is the coolest thing of all. I have no idea what he says after he hangs up the phone, but to my face he has been very polite and I have to give him some sort of reward for that!

So, we shelved any fingerboard discussion for now. Maybe I can take some of Mike's and Steve's leftovers and go with those! Most likely we will go with a very simple 12th fret deal.

What’s the big deal? Just go with a tree-of-life in greenheart abalone. Done!

Yeah, this is always tough! Not sure if you want any ideas, but depending on how dark the fretboard is, and how subtle you want the inlays to be, you can use that Snakewood diamond on the neck, maybe smaller versions until the 12th fret. Outlined in the white wood, they'd stand out, and the Snakewood is beautiful. I'm sure whatever you come up with be beautiful!

Dang it, I should have talked to you before! I think I would have to go with a Taylor presentation model for that!

So, can I assume this was already discussed and discarded?

No, I mentioned more diamonds, but at that point we had kind of given up, still up for ideas! I like the wood diamonds a lot. I really like the one he did in the rosette.

Love that diamond, that's what I was referring to for the neck. If the wood is very dark and you want to be very subtle, either no outline or a not-as-bright outline. If you want it to stand out, maybe go with the white outline. But yes, that wood diamond is beautiful!

Well Mike, we are going to do a mock up with diamonds this time. We will see how that looks...thanks for the help. Will Ben have to name it the Alpine 2 pattern?

Smile Diamonds!!! Yessss

Remember, if you ever want to lay it down and play lap slide, those diamonds will pay off big time! Not that I have ever seen anyone else but me lay a fingerstyle axe with low action down and play steel! Haha.

And the gold Jescar hard frets are wise in that case, too.

I like the idea of the snakewood diamonds with the cream outlines!

Have fun! This sure is a beauty!!!

Paul

Thanks Paul, but I think I will pass with the slides on this one. LOL

So I think we have come to a decision on the fingerboard. I presented an option to the Benster and he ran with it and made it better (the guy just can't give me anything even after I agreed to using a Lowes shelf for a top!!!!)...

Anyway, here are the options he/we came up with...I have chosen and the work is probably done by now, but I thought I would put them all up here to see what others would have chosen. Of course my choice is correct and all who do not pick it are wrong, but as long as you can accept that, choose away

The first option is simply three diamonds at the 12th as seen in the first picture. The other two are self explanatory:
