Default If Mahogany is your favorite what strings work best with this wood.

Curious if people think Mahogany works best with a preticular type of string.
I am going back and forth between 80/20 and phosporus bronze. Very different sound.

I prefer Phosphor Bronze with Mahogany. But then again I prefer PhosBronze's in most cases on pretty much every type of wood.

But I do think the PhosBronze and Mahogany compliment each other nicely.

Define best. What's best to me may suck to you. That said I find it hard to get away from D'Addario EJ16's

+1 on the PhosBronze for Hog

80/20 for Rosewood

I have found the little Darker sound that the PhosBronze has helps out the lows that can sometimes be a little lacking in Mahogany and vice versa with the 80/20 on RW.

Hi DOUBLENECK

The question is what string sounds best to you on your mahogany guitar,
THE 80/20'S or the phosporus bronze.Only you can decide what you like better. What sounds nice to someone else may not sound nice to you

I've got some 80/20s on my mahogany/lutz spruce guitar, and they sound really good on it. When new, it came with 80/20s on it, from a luthier whose name you may recognize--Paul Woolson.

I personally find that Mahogany sounds best with 'dryer' strings...ie, not elixirs.....I love elixirs, but I find that a bit of a more mellow string brings out the qualities of hog better.

There is no "one string fits all mahogany guitars", because there isn't just one mahogany guitar out there.
Different designs, different tops, different builders, inherent differences between even "identical" guitars.

On my Flammang 12 fret OM Mahogany/Adirondack? Newtone Master Class 80/20's.

On my Martin OM18V? Martin Phosphor Bronze.

On my Collings OM18SS? John Pearse 80/20.

That's this month.
When I want something different, I try different strings on them.

Steve,
Just about any quality string will sound good on a mahogany guitar, provided you play them in for a couple of weeks before listening to them.

I go back and forth between 80/20 and PB too, but I'm not sure if you mean an all mahogany guitar, or one with mahogany back and sides (and say, a spruce top). I only have it as a back/side wood.

I like 80/20 better, less harsh/bright. But that might have to do more with how I play (and what I play and how I hear things).

Funny you should ask. Normally I use p/b John Pearse lights on my mahogany Lowden, but was fresh out the other day and put Pearse 80/20s on it. It sounded way too bright and harsh to my ear - in fact the recording I made with them was somewhat jarring (Young at Heart).

So I definitely vote for p/bs, at least for my particular pet hog.

He, he, I did actually mean to say I like "PB" better, and not 80/20. No idea where my head was when I wrote that.
