need a 43" mountain dulcimer case
Anyone know of any places that do custom cases at reasonable prices? I have a teardrop Edsel Martin mountain dulcimer that's 43"x7". None of the cases I can find online are long enough. Cedar Creek made a case for another dulcimer for me about 15 years ago for $200, but they want $500 now. I'm hoping to find a more budget friendly option ...or a premade that will fit.

How about a keyboard case?

I thought about it but they'd be too deep and too wide. The dulcimer would rattle around in there too much.
I might have a line on a custom Ameritage if they'll do such a thing. If they do, I can buy it through a luthier and get their discount. I'm waiting to hear back on that.

Not suggesting this is ideal, but if a custom case is out for cost reasons, adding your own foam inserts to a "too large" keyboard case would seem to be an option.

Try a gun case? You'll have to look around to find one that fits. Here's a nice one just to give you an idea (only 42" inside though).

You can get a keyboard case for a 61-key keyboard.
Something like this? Interior dimension is 43" long. And it has straps to keep it from rolling around. https://www.amazon.com/Gator-GK-61-S...0002CZZDI?th=1 |

I've arrived at a solution. I reached out to Adam Buchwald of Circle Strings. Adam has made me a couple of guitars from him in recent years and he offered to allow me to order an Ameritage case through him so I'd get the dealer discount. At $400 it doesn't come in a lot cheaper but it keeps a hundred in my pocket and the dulcimer will have a good home in a top notch case. I sent a tracing and they're going to cut the foam so it matches the contour of the teardrop shape. The Edsel Martin is as much a piece of folk art as it is an instrument and I want to keep it safe. I'd have gone with Cedar Creek if a better option didn't come along.

The Ameritage case arrived and it fits like a glove. Those folks do really nice work.

Nice job on the case, fits like a glove!
I'm a mountain dulcimer player too. Never heard of that maker, how does it play/sound?

I own a couple of Edsel Martin dulcimers. The one in the new case is a tear drop and has the singing lady on the headstock. The other is an hourglass and has an owl. I also own a couple of Edsel's wood carvings. It's becoming harder to find his work for sale these days and the prices have more than doubled from when I bought these about 10 years ago.
