Timely info - I'll be getting to the drilling by the end of the week. Regarding the resale hit on a modified guitar, this will be the biggest possible - I'm imagining the roar of air rushing past the ears during a skydive. I play righty guitars upside down, lefthanded, and the port will be on the treble side of a cutaway, no less.

I find ports are more for feedback to the player rather than opening the sound of an instrument up

Its wood but same theory, I put any ports up in the front bout

That's right about where I'll put mine. This cutaway has a flat area that will stabilize a plastic cup contraption I imagine fashioning around an electric drill's nose, serving as a dust container.

The mind boggles .

You will probably have to put the soundport in the lower bout in that case ... although it would of course depend on the configuration of the cutaway.

Just out of interest, do you play left handed ala Libba Cotten, (ie bass strings nearer the floor than the treble strings) or do you reverse the strings so that the treble strings are nearer the floor ? (which would of course require a saddle routing to correct the intonation).

As Cotten, bass strings towards the floor. Electrics require that I use lefthanded ones, (keep the forearm away from the knobs), though, to flip the string arrangement to righty, I file the bridge and saddles etc. to allow for the proper intonation.

Made the port. It was raining outside where I performed the task, and when the saw cut through the strings sounded, which I guess is to be expected - it's a Rainsong. Used a moist sponge as a dust suppressor, the fine-toothed hole-saw cut through quickly and cleanly. I used a Milwaukee brand 'impact' hole saw 7/8", 22mm. The thin wafer plug remnant is one tough bugger to flex.

Nice to see, fine tooth hole saw is good, mix up some fibreglass resin or some araldite (epoxy) and wipe the edge, this will minimise split outs / fracures or even splinters in fingers.
