Anybody remember Moosylvania?

Being originally from the Lone Star State (and the blacksheep of the family for moving away), my relatives from time to time share something along these lines:

El Paso is closer to San Diego than it is to Houston

Beaumont is closer to Tampa than El Paso.

Brownsville is closer to Mexico City than DFW.

Texarkana is closer to Atlanta than El Paso.

Corpus is closer to Cuba than Denver.

Austin is closer to New Orleans than El Paso

Amarillo is closer to Canada than Belize.

Pyongyang and Seoul are closer together than Austin and Houston

DFW is closer to Hawaii than London

Dallas to Houston is nearly the same distance as Paris to London.

This is all terribly confusing. Where are we? I was convinced the earth was flat. What changed the narrative?

When you leave Louisiana on I-10 near Lake Charles and drive across Texas to El Paso, it better be around June 21 if you want to make it across in daylight! Its about 900 miles

I would have lost that bet.

Like others I always thought of east and west as simply being referenced from where I am.
After all, north and south are.

Of course we can't argue with the thought-up idea agreed to by (and imposed on us by) people that there is an imaginary vertical line assigned to a sparsely-populated part of the globe that is henceforth the reference for east and west.

Weird, and anti-intuitive.

BTW looking into this subject I ran across this Wiki piece about the International Date Line.
Fascinating read.

Seen on a sign this past week: "If the Earth were flat, cats would push stuff off the edge". This business usually has some amusing quote or pithy statement on their signboard, changing weekly.
