That was a song that impressed me so much when I first heard it that I taught myself to play it. Someone showed me a way to do it very easily, but not perfectly correct. None the less, making progress on it at the time was more important to me and I've stuck with that version ever since.

Now I want to go home and get out the White Album... I still have it on vinyl... I should get the cd and enjoy it at the office. Matter of fact, I think I'll pick one up for Tommy Lee Jones while I'm at it. Get it?

Blackbird and Stairway... required material for any budding acoustic guitarist. I know both, showed both to my son. I haven't spent a lot of time playing Starway since 1980 (unless I want to irritate a salesperson in B.B.), but I still like playing Blackbird. Overplayed for sure, but the tune seems timeless, and you can't deny it's just plain fun to play.

Hey Strat, when you were here in June did I show you my White album pressed in white vinyl??

I'm still trying to figure out the Tommy Lee Jones reference...

I think Blackbird is a great tune. And Stairway as well.

Both are certainly overplayed in Guitar stores. Maybe not today so much...but in years past.

Yet, I never learned Blackbird, and I have doodled on parts of Stairway. But, then again...I've never really sat down to learn any tune note by note, except way back 25-30 years ago, when some friends and I used to learn some 'America' tunes, and a few others.

I do play lots of songs. I play hundreds and hundreds, by ear. But, I don't try to recreate them note by note. I usually just listen to the song on a CD (or LP years ago) and just play along.

If I am in a guitar store, I usually have many of my own songs, little guitar ditties, or riffs to use to try out a guitar.

I know how to play it, but I don't, IMO, its the Stairway to Heaven on Acoustic. I never learned Stairway though.

Yeah, someone mentioned Dust in the Wind, thats another standard along with Landslide.

Default Blackbird

I can play it and I like hearing other people play it. Everybody's version sounds different to me, but none sounds exactly like Paul's. Same thing with "Yesterday". He uses his wierd thumb/first finger strumming method.

I grew up during the Beatle years and really enjoy hearing YOUNG people play Beatle tunes like Blackbird nowadays in music stores.

By the way, I heard a teenager play a great version of Leo Kottke's "Airproofing" a few weeks ago at a Guitar Center.

I think it's cool that teenagers are listening to Leo Kottke! My nephew is 14 and he is into whatever passes for rock music these days, but while giving him guitar lessons I have turned him on to the music of Steve Howe, John Renbourn, etc.

I forgot about Landslide - that's a good one, I only know part of it that I could figure out by ear. Now a really good fingerpicker is 'Never Going Back Again' or something like that - it is the Lindsay Buckingham song, I forget what Mac album it is on.

And then there is the Peter Frampton acoustic number off of Frampton Comes Alive.

and Bron-Yr-Aur by Zeppelin

rock music certainly has spawned some nice acoustic tunes -

Many thanks,

PS - I can't play this yet ! ........
Andy,

It uses standard tuning, but the run up the neck uses the A and the B & high E strings, rather than just the A and B strings. I'll see if I can find the tabs to show you the diffenence.

Tabbed all three (blushes modestly):

The "stretch" version:

E |-----------------------------------|
B |---5-------8-------7-------10------|
G |-------0-------0-------0-------0---|
D |-----------------------------------|
A |---3-------4-------5-------6-------|
E |-----------------------------------|

The "non-stretch" version:

E |-----------3---------------5-------|
B |---5---------------7---------------|
G |-------0-------0-------0-------0---|
D |-----------------------------------|
A |---3-------4-------5-------6-------|
E |-----------------------------------|

Personally, I think the "stretch" version is easier to play. Also, contrary to all the tabs I've seen for this song, I think the picking pattern is:

E|--------------------------------------|
B|--12----12------12--12----12------12--|
G|------0-------0---------0-------0-----|
D|--------------------------------------|
A|--10-------10-------10-------10-------|
E|--------------------------------------|

Hacker's nailed it. Those are the 2 verisions I know. Lately, I've felt the "non-stretch' version is easier, but talk to me in 6 months...I might change my mind!

When I get to the top of the neck, I just sort of noodle around on those three notes free form...trying to imitate the sound of a blackbird, as I think McCartney was trying to do.
