The kid is good and the kind of music I just enjoyed is the perfect medium for his natural speed.

Thumbs up

I've taken a look at some of the other tunes posted, including his own compositions - he'd great. Also doesn't that relatively inexpensive mahogany-backed Maton sound great unplugged?!

I agree - it's a male thing. My son wanted to know which were the highest mountains (hills by US scale) in Britain - he climbed the three and I don't think he's been up any more since. What a shame!

EXACTLY my sentiments, starting about 15 seconds into the clip. It's actually a pretty nice composition with some original twists and turns, but who can enjoy them when it's so obviously about "look how fast I can play?" It's basically the same issue I have with guys like Steve Vai - nice chops, but who cares? (Well, obviously some do, just not I.)

But I'd bet he'll grow into it and slow it down. The main thing I heard under all the antic fireworks was a fingerstyle composer.

I agree, the kid has major talent, but he needs to make his mark, covering other folks stuff does not impress me, whether him or anybody.

He will grow into a great talent for sure, and speed does get old, that song was "frantic", really clean but still "frantic".

Yet some how here we are talking about him..... When he slows down (in about 30 yrs) and starts to "feel" it it will then be great as he will really know his way around and get there seamlessly and be way ahead of me who never had the speed in the first place...

Kram,
For as long as I've played (since 1963), I knew early on that I would never be able to be a speedster. My synapses just don't fire that quickly, but that is to my advantage, though I did not know it at the time.

It has made me focus more on using whatever skills I have to compose stuff that I find musically and rhythmically engaging and satisfying.

If you think he's 'way ahead' of you because of his speed, I think you're in need of some reframing. Remember the tortoise and the hare.

Best,
Howard

Kind of surprised about some of the negative comments by a few who should know better. Perhaps you just listened to the one clip listed by the OP. Here is one of his own composition - nice tune and well played at a relaxed tempo.

I wasn't saying anything negative about the kid. Just wasn't my cup of tea. And I listened to 8 or 9 of his youtube vids and didn't get more than about 40 seconds into any of them.

The kid's a talented player...I'm sure as he gets more maturity, he'll become more interesting to me. I'd also be interested to see what kind of an entertainer he is. A lot of people that I'd never buy a CD from are MUCH better when you see them live.

A lot of talent but definitely needs to mature and develop into his own style and not rely on TE's. I read his bio on his website..... he quit school at an early age to play guitar..... first mistake.

That is indeed nicer, if more Tommyish....as is expected and understandable given his age and location.

I hear the dog liked it too!

I think some of you are obsessed with the speed, and miss the obvious. The boy is only sixteen, and he plays like a master. Unless you all know people that played as good at his age, I'd say that's pretty remarkable. Forget about whether or not it's your style, your guitar players aren't you? Can't you admire his achievement and save the rest for another ten years or so when he develops a place of his own?

Yep, don't get me wrong. He already made his mark. Get his latest CD, only one song (Misty) not written by him. And some of the songs are slow wonderful ballads...

Also, do not judge Joe by a few youtube videos. Listen to his own stuff, that will say enough!
