So, let’s add some colour to the binding.

When we got talking about this build Mike and I both liked the idea of a dark blue binding. Mike volunteered to use a wood binding (figured maple) and then add the colour to it and match it to the blue in the resin-flooded burl.

Here is the result on the arm bevel:

The side port had the maple filler piece cut back to make the binding and then the colour added:

And the binding goes well with the end graft too:

Mike tells me the colour he added lets the maple binding show through under light (as in the photos) and looks darker blue in less light. A nice combination.

So, with koa back and sides, blue spruce and blue binding I am going to name this 00 "Blue Hawaii". I don't plan to do Elvis numbers on it but the name kind of suits it

I am in awe as I watch this transoceanic cruiser come to life. This is surely one of Mike's most stunning creations!

On a side note, you can sing all the Elvis you want with that guitar, man, but unless my memory fails me, you'd better get permission from El Conquistador before christening your guitar with the name of his Retreux.

Wow--this is really looking amazing!

The tie-in of the binding and bevel with the endgraft and rosette really brings it all together so nicely.

Looking forward to seeing this one in person as I'm heading down to visit Mike this weekend.

You're a lucky man, Colin--congrats!

Wow! Just stunning Colin. I can't believe Mike colored the binding and bevel AFTER it was on the guitar.

I also can't wait to see this guitar in person and play it. I am so lucky that Colin is stopping by my house for a couple days after he picks up this beauty.

Congrats!!!

The binding and other finishing is coming together.

Mike uses tape to protect the rest of the guitar then sprays the binding to add colour. A very time consuming process, but the results are quite dramatic.

The back is looking good as the finish is applied.

And here is how the headstock is coming.

Slight delay in posting these as I spent yesterday driving and then at a fantastic guitar concert near San Luis Obispo, with a couple of Baranik players on stage and several AGFers in the audience (Hi Nemoman!). Big thanks to AGF's Jennconducts, who organises this concert each year. Well done Jenn!

Called in on Mike today and saw the guitar in real life. The blue trim looks even better in reality than in the images. It is distinctive, but a bit more subtle than the images suggest.

The neck is not attached yet but the bridge is going on today. Should be "strummable" very soon!

Well, yeah - that coloured binding is outstanding. Great match to the resin in the burl and looks outstanding regardless.
