Default Songs like Randall Knife, Blues Run The Game etc.

Hi everyone

I'm a big fan of fingerpicking and in particular songs such as:

- Randall Knife
- Blues Run The Game
- Clay Pigeons
- If Only I Could Fly
- Pancho & Lefty

I was wondering whether anyone could recommend songs similar to these to learn? I like how they don't require an amazing voice, are emotional songs and fun to fingerpick.

I'd appreciate anyone's recommendations!

Thanks everyone!

Here are a few that I like to finger pick that might fit your style. Chords and lyrics for these are pretty available on various websites.

75 Septembers - Cheryl Wheeler (this version has a piano on it too but I have done a fingerpicking version of it.)

Summer Evening by Greg Brown - here done by Gillian Welch

Caddo County - Verlon Thompson

The Rocket - Fred Eaglesmith - here played by Mary Gauthier

Best,
Jayne

Everything by Guy Clark. Let Him Roll, LA Freeway, Dublin Blues, Rita Ballou, Broken Hearted People, it goes on forever. Based on your list, you'll love his work.

I like your taste in music. Mine is pretty much the same, and I do them mostly with Travis picking, just to identify the rhythm.

All great suggestions so far.

One CD that has a few such tunes is Nanci Griffith's Other Voices, Other Rooms. Like:

Across the Great Divide
Tecumseh Valley -- another good Townes song
Boots of Spanish Leather
Can't Help but Wonder where I'm Bound

Jayne, I owe you one for Caddo County. That's outstanding. I'll add it to the rep and give you credit for it. (at least the first few times)

Great song here. One of many great ones by Kane, Welch and Kaplin.

So happy to hear that you’re going to add it to the rep. It is one of my favorites. Verlon has some good songs and his guitar playing does them justice.

Best,
Jayne

We lost a great writer this week. RIP David Olney
I think this song might fit your search for a nice song in the Randall Knife style.

I didn't ask the question but I'm sure glad you did. I'm a fingerpicker also and it looks like I have enough new material for the next decade. Thanks to everyone for sharing.
