Default Crossover?

Right now I am using a mixer and two passive speakers with a PA amp for solo performances (vocals and acoustic/electric guitar). Short of buying a whole new PA system like a Bose, or adding a heavy sub-woofer to the system, is it possible to use a crossover and a small bass speaker cabinet to add some bottom to my sound?

The low note on a standard tuning guitar is about 85Hz. There are some sub-harmonics (specially on a dread), but these are seldom heard through a PA system. Certainly a subwoofer or bass cabinet will not do much of anything for an acoustic guitar's live sound - systems like the Bose (and others) have a much higher crossover point (the little dome speakers are for high-mids and treble), and the 'sub' is carrying the low-mids and bass.
If your current PA speakers don't have a good bottom end, consider getting some that do, unless you really want to swap out the whole system.

Thank you Mike, for your direct and concise answer! I keep trying to refine my sound system for optimal sound quality taking into consideration portability and expense.

The way you are thinking does make some sense but you will be drawn into a process of diminishing returns from which you will learn a lot, mostly that you should have bought a more effective, integrated system appropriate to your needs.

Yamaha dxr12s are excellent for acoustic and vocals with a ton of headroom.
