Custom Goodall OOO picked up today
A couple of months ago I spent a few hours with James, Jean and Luke Goodall talking about the ideal guitar, for me, right now and for the coming years. I just turned 71, so looking down the road a bit a short scale guitar seemed a good idea. I've owned Goodalls before, and loved them, but often found them a bit 'shimmery' with overtones for the Americana ballads I seem to be drawn to. Shoulder issues and some tonal preferences steered me toward my favortie body shape, the OOO.
So we talked tonewood a while and then walked into their wood room. A couple of hours later a had a chosen set. (Boy is it an experience talking tonewood with James and Luke, with the pieces right there in front of you.) Back and Sides: I chose AAA East Indian Rosewood. Its been my main wood for fifty odd years of playing. I've owned Cocobolo, Madegascar RW and Honduran RW Collings and Goodall guitars, and they were great. But when push comes to shove, I'm just not sure they're worth the $$ for the incremental change in tone. So I went with as fine a piece of EIR as they had. Top: Here is where I think the $$ are well spent: Our discussions had led me to Adirondack Spuce as being the tonewood most likely to deliver tones more "on the tonic note" of the string, and less likely to imbue the sound with the excess overtones I was trying to avoid. James had some beautiful master grade Adi I was going over, and then he pulled out a stack of torrefied Adi that he had just got from a supplier in Canada. In that stack was a piece of Adi that he had penciled as 'Special Reserve'. It was gorgeous. He then said he had a small supply left of 'old style' perfect black ebony for the fretboard, and we had out basic set. Eye candy and details: Especially on a OOO short scale, I wanted a cutaway on this guitar, so I went with a soft option. I asked for curly Koa binding and back strip, and Green Abalone for the Rosette. I like a 1 3/4" nut instead of his standard 1 13/16" for the OOO, and his short scale was fine with me (an even 25"). James likes ebony for the headstock; I like it to match the back and sides, so we went with EIR So that's what we ended up with...a custom Goodall OOO, EIR with a torrefied 'special reserve' Adirondack top, with Koa bindings. At the last minute I through in a little additional bling to please someone dear to me; I probably would have forgone the doves, but I can live with it. the guitar sings. It's like it's alive. Kinda spooky, and wonderful. I can't ever figure out how to get pics in here, but there are pics (including a pic of the more detailed spec sheet) HERE : I

Congratulations.
Sounds like your fantastic day at the shop has turned into a special guitar. Really like your approach to size, wood selection etc and the idea of dialing in that classic Goodall sound but with the mix of overtones that suits you. That torrefied top looks particularly good, and it pairs up beautifully with the koa. Well done! |

Congrats on your new 'lifetime' guitar ! That was very quick turnaround.
I know it was a hassle selling your other beautiful Goodalls to get to this point. Now that it is done...ENJOY! Now, I have to find an excuse to come visit you and the Goodalls, so I can hear and see it. BTW, I still have that video of us doing Dimming of the Day at the Goodall 'Factory'. I listen to it when I need a laugh. Stay in touch.

Wow. Congrats. It has the darkest ebony fret board I've ever seen. Nice.
