Default Janky auto”correct”?

Mods, please feel free to move this to the appropriate spot.

Does anyone else think the autocorrect on this site has a mind of its own? I get the weirdest changes when I type from my phone, far weirder than I remember on other outlets. I see ghost “words” showing up in other people’s posts here, too.

I like autocorrect and use it everywhere, but I wish there was a way to disable it on AGF. Is there?

I'm sure the mods can clarify, but I'm pretty sure this site has no autocorrect, in the sense of it changing what you type. As I write this (on a laptop) I've purposely misspelled many words and it's never attempted to correct any of them.

The autocorrect is native on your phone. If the behavior is different on this site than on others, that's a mystery related to how the function was implemented on your phone.

Correct! That came up in another thread a few weeks ago. No autocorrect native to AGF.

Fascinating. Thanks for the lead. I just disabled autocorrect on my iPhone. Fingers crossed.

I brought this up a couple of weeks ago and got the same answer. I went to my browsers and made some changes to spell check. I don't feel like I have much control over much of this really. I've noticed some parts of this autocorrect and spell check seem to come and go. The most interesting part of this to me so far is how seldom I use commas and how often I should.

My favorite auto-correct story was several years ago when we were meeting some friends at a restaurant for dinner. We got there on time; they were late. My wife began typing the text message: 'We're here, have reserved a table.'

She typed the 't' in table, hesitated for a second, and auto-correct took over and put in the word 'tsunami.'

Our friends were like 'what?' We had a good laugh over it when they arrived.

For Wall St. Journal subscribers, there was a piece with video on this recently.

Your auto-correct has to and needs to be trained as a way to be more capable than simple dictionaries that ave been around for a long time. At times we make mistakes training it whether or not we realize it.

If it's about phone use, there are third party keyboard apps that can be better. Swiftkey that started as an Android app and with Apple version and now owned owned by Microsoft is really good whether or not you like Microsoft. It satisfies privacy matters via some compliance it has, offers a numeral row, and generally works really well.

There are other fine keyboard apps but I can attest to how well Swiftkey works because my area of responsibility manages a few hundred mobile devices and also has to deal with compliance and reliability.
