I read the linked article, and I'm now listening to the audio on the Ernie Ball site. I knew she used a pick on bass, but it sounds like that wasn't unusual in her era from the pull quote in the article. Again, if anyone doesn't know the name, Carole Kaye is quite possibly on more recordings than any other bass player ever.
I'm no where near that good, but I tend to play bass with a pick 90% of the time and flat wounds around half the time. The pick choice is just because I've never been able to develop a picking hand callus. I've always been a bit embarrassed by using a pick and thinking it's not "the right way" to play the bass. I'm not sure what I'd do if I had to have just one bass, but once I had two basses, one would have flats on it for sure.
