Medleys/mashups
I love playing medleys of songs. I was just sitting here working out a medley of "Into the Mystic" and "Sundown" on mandolin.
Some of my favorites on guitar are - "Carmelita" by Warren Zevon and "When Rita Leaves" by Delbert McClinton - "Poke Salad Annie" by Tony Joe White and "Marie Laveau" by Bobby Bare - "Can't Find My Way Home" by Blind Faith and "Dublin Blues" by Guy Clark fingerpicked in Drop D. Many times I'll start with one song and do a verse and chorus and then sing the second song in its entirety and then come back to the final verses and chorus of the first song. What are some medleys you do? I saw a young guy recently playing solo on a Taylor GS mini and he did a medley of Hall & Oates, Bob Marley, and Sugarhill Gang. It was sweet. I love stringing songs together, either by the same artist or a mixed selection... however, one of my sticking points is that the songs HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER TO EXPRESS A COMMON THEME...
And, I do the entire songs with very few exceptions (unless a partial is "part" of the overall theme/idea/concept... Always gripes my butt when I hear people just putting partial renditions of GREAT songs (I'm a songwriter and lyrics are REALLY important, both to me and to the composer who wrote the tune... I won't "short" them.... So, yeah, I do a bunch of stuff like this... Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, The Band, Traffic, Elvis Costello, my own stuff... fun, and with a bit of forethought, a very effective communication device. Back in the 80's, when I was gigging a lot around the SF Bay Area, I got tired of those "pregnant silences" after playing a song, doing a great job of it... and getting NOTHING from the audience. Always felt uncomfortable to me, and I was probably nervous about being there, anyway... still get nervous and flustered, after 50+ years of doing this! So, I figured if I just kept going, nobody had to deal with that "moment"... turned out to be a very useful technique to employ, and I enjoy doing it today... also makes sets go faster. I'll play three or four tunes together, and, voila! 15-20 minutes have passed! Lets me take a breather and chat a little with the audience beforelaunching into whatever's next.
