Default How to sing and play with different tempos?

So I am currently working on the Chris Cornell acoustic version of black hole sun for both guitar and vocals (if you haven't seen it you should definitely watch it, it's a beautiful arrangement and I didn't even like the original that much).
But the problem is that the vocals and has a much slower feel to it than the guitar part (even though I'm positive that technically they are on the same tempo). So my question is what would be the best way of integrating these two pieces so that I don't mess up the rhythm for either part?

Here's the link to the video if you haven't heard it:

In the places where he is adding an extra beat just after those places try pretending you are just starting up the music again so you will be on time.

Oh, well that explains part of the mischief haha, I didn't notice him adding extra beats. Guess my rhythm skills were even shakier than I thought.

He’s basically feeling the song in the moment and adjusting to it accordingly. The solo part is in 9/8 on the studio version and I had a hard time counting this one because he’s not exactly following the meter, he’s just feeling it.

Pretty straight forward to me. Most of his singing is on cue with the meter sprinkled with some very slight syncopation here and there. But, I didn't (couldn't) listen all the way through.
