Whoa! That's an interesting piece of music your instructor is using to demo your guitar! Impressive chops! The guitar sounds wonderful and your story is too - congratulations on finding this treasure!

Thanks Matthew. The back is gorgeous. Is that Brazilian rosewood?
Pardon the question, but I don't know much about pre-war Martin's, only that I can't afford them.

rotfl neither can I, hence the ten years of up-trading. Yes, it's brazilian, boring old straight grain stuff; Martin preferred this when they were using Brz because the figured stuff tended to crack. Our coco Meridians are holding strong though! Maybe b/c stable humidity.

My old Martin turned 90 on February 11th; didn't get a chance to post b/c way too busy at work. I am, however, finally having a pro photographer come over next week and will add some better shots. Stay tuned.
After over a year of playing it, I know know that the only things I have to grab while running out of my house on fire are the wife, the kids, and this guitar. (Good news is the wife and kids know how to run . Plus, if they took a big carbon monoxide hit, I'd still have time to go get them after placing the guitar in its Hoffee Case locked in my SUV, correct? This really is one of the most emotionally expressive and sonorous guitars I have ever had the privilege of playing, much less owning. Me being lefty playing righty has something to do with it, but it's so resonant I can just hammer on and pull off with left hand strength exercises that sometimes I just do that for twenty minutes or so. I never flatpick, so I can't tell you really if it's any good at that. But I can with somewhat rose-colored confirmation bias, that it's absolutely a joy for fingerstyle. A guitar with which to be buried, with the exception that I hope one of my sons takes up guitar . Hope ya'll are well. |

Very cool that you are now the caretaker of this guitar and that it obviously brings you such joy.
It was quite the experience to be able to play it last year at BIG. Not only was it special to play, but just to hold and ponder the countless folks that have probably played it throughout its history. Very special indeed... Thanks for sharing your update--will miss seeing you again in Texas.

Congrats -- that's an awesome story and your patience paid off. It's was also great that the one damaged in transit was accepted back by the seller. That could have easily had an ugly ending.
While I'm personally not a vintage instrument guy, I enjoy reading about instrument history. There is a book called "The Martin Ukulele: The Little Instrument that Helped Create a Guitar Giant" which is an excellent read about Martin's early history and success with ukes. It really should be required reading for any Martin lover. The level of detail and information is really fascinating. Imagine managing your supply chain through letters that took weeks or months to arrive at their destination? Enjoy your holy grail and I hope when I check back on this thread your video is working so I can hear that beauty as well.
