I ran into the same problem and bought a Les Paul copy for about $300, then a few years later I decided to upgrade that to a Gretsch goldtop for about $500.

If you insist on getting a Gibson Les Paul, be prepared to pay you dues.

Haha. He is set on one so I guess I'm stuck. At least it's the cheaper Tribute model.

There are a few sites selling ‘floor models’ of Gibsons for decent discounts, but not the 2018’s. Too soon to see the new models on sale.

The 2017 models are identical TMK, and you can grab one for $100 less before negotiations - here's Sweetwater's selection:

https://www.sweetwater.com/c590--Sol...cyBQYXVsIl19fQ

Don't know if he's got a color picked out yet, but I own an earlier version of the goldtop (mine has soapbar P-90's) - the PRS-style revealed-edge "binding" makes it look like an under-the-bed '56, that was put away when Elvis got drafted and rediscovered when Grandma moved to Florida; if you want the visual vibe of the '57 RI but don't want to spend five times the price of the Tribute, this is a great way to get it - and IME it'll fool all but the sharpest-eyed players when he's up on stage...

Those 2017 (and I'm assuming 2018) Les Paul Tributes seem like excellent guitars. I was going to order one in May but then I found a great deal on a Standard. I'd still like to pick one up.

As mentioned, you might save $ with a 2017.

Thanks guys. My son has apparently found some difference in 2017 and 2018.... He's played both and heart is set on 2018. Guess I will wait and see if a thanksgiving special rolls around ... If not, bite the bullet I guess. Tsphanks again.

You can always call Musicians Friend and ask them for the discount. Lots of times they will discount the item over the phone.

black friday and cyber monday are coming. be prepared now by phone or in person, checking prices with a few of the online and local shops. if you allow them to send you emails, then you may be able to grab a good price on one of those days. i did that two years ago when i snagged a vox ac15 for $400. at least $200 off regular price. but you have to be diligent. check with sweetwater, musician's friend, GC, zz sounds, american musical supply, sam ash, AGF sponsors, etc. do a google search>shopping and see who is selling the one(s) you are looking at.

play music!

I'll second muscmp's suggestion on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Watch for deals online and in the store.

You know, you'll get a lot more for your money with a used Les Paul. My first one was bought used at about 50% of the new price. I still have it, some forty years later.

That might be what happens.... Went to order the dang thing today (with 10% off) from my GC and was shocked to find out they went from $999 to $1099 within the last couple days. Completely ticked me off. A company in that kind of financial shape raising the price here right before Xmas. I'm trying to talk my son into a Yamaha or Fender as I type this!!!! Maybe I can get him to go with tribute 2017.... Researching difference tonight
