Are you okay with used, or are you wanting new?

I would definately go for a used upper end Epiphone Les Paul unless you want something a bit brighter. If so, then I would look at a Gretsch Pro Jet.

A LTD EC model. Here's the EC-256 for $449 new at Sweetwater:
https://www.sweetwater.com/store/det...56-black-satin Used, you could find an EC-1000 with Seymour Duncan pickups (or EMGs if that's what you want). I have one with the JB/Jazz and it's a great guitar and not nearly as heavy as a Les Paul but it does sound different. |

Somebody gave me a "Tradition" Les Paul copy for some work I did on his amp. With a little tweak to the truss rod and a bridge adjust it is the sweetest Les Paul I ever played. He says he paid about $300 for it used.

You could go on a hunt for a used LP Studio or Tribute.
Might find one in your price range. Epiphone Les Pauls (Especially the more recent ones) are really hard to hate for the money. Pro Bucker pickups are good and the hardware on the more recent builds is far better than what you could expect in the past. |

Epiphone Les Pauls are all over in from great to near mint condition for around 300 dollars. Purchased two for that price in the past two years. they are out there..just keep your eyes open. they play and sound great..

I have an old Aria MIJ 335 knockoff that's awesome, and their Les Paul knockoffs are equally impressive. Usually are quite a few listed on Reverb.

The best advice I could give you would be to hit as many pawnshops in your area, and check on CL, and Facebook Marketplace on a very regular basis.
There's a VERY good chance you could find a Gibson LP Studio in your price range. You have to make sure you have cash in hand when you visit all the pawnshops in case you run into a deal. The same goes for CL or Facebook Marketplace. You have to act quickly if you find a crazy good deal because a killer deal will go quickly. I scored a '05 Gibson Black LP Studio with an OHSC for $286+ tax in December '19 at a pawnshop. The store really wanted move inventory at the end of the year ,and I told them I'd take it off their hands for what they had in it. They agreed, and I got an amazing deal.

That's an amazing find. I would have paid double without a second thought.
