I can see them now! That headstock looks fabulous, and even with the marquetry, the semicircle and shape still communicate Bashkin.

Default Opinions please!

Having a hard time with this one, Custom Shop Forum:

I will be ordering black MOP tuners (Waverly) but have to pick nickel or gold. What do you think? (Note, tuners in pics are not the actual tuners, they are there to help me pick the metal finish). The actual tuners are linked below:

I'd go with the gold--it ties in better to the wood tones IMHO...

I'm with Nemoman; the gold goes well with the colours in the inlay.

While I prefer nickel in absolute terms, I agree with Nemoman and Colin.

Be an Olympian and go for the gold!

Gold to match the warm tones of the yellows, oranges, and browns.

All black would look outstanding, too, and give some more visual weight to the center of the front headstock in balance to the border. I know Michael mainly uses Waverlies, but if you aren't wedded to them you could look into a company that offers all black machines. I like the open back look on Michael's builds so I wouldn't go with Gotoh, but maybe something like Alessi.

Thanks for all the input so far! I'm leaning towards the gold based on all your feedback. I have been searching for open back tuners in finishes other than gold/nickel, but not much luck. I do agree that a black or maybe gunmetal finish would accentuate nicely. Maybe because of the vintage vibe the color tones steer conservative rather than modern. I have Alessi tuners on my Carter-Poulsen and like them but I always wondered what replacing a single tuner or repair would look like because it's such a small operation...

I remember looking at the GrandTunes - the vintage copper finish in particular. But in checking with Michael he said he had uneven experiences with them and steered me away...

Nickel looks better to me, especially with black MOP buttons. I have owned, but do not like, the Schallers. Alessi tuners are very inconsistent. The set on one of my Brondels is the best set of tuners I’ve ever felt (but was a replacement for a first set with a lot of issues). The Alessis on my other Brondel are tight/stiff and offer no advantage over Waves. Nickel goes with everything, in my opinion.

For what it is worth, I have them on two my instruments a they both are fine. I have Waverly tuners on two of my guitars and my experience with them has been inconsistent (one perfect and one not). Many times, some issues relate to installation.

Bob, I appreciate that additional insight - I'm going to take a closer look at the finishes and talk to Michael about them.

How do folks feel about the Schaller Ruthenium/Ebony or Copper/Koa?

The Ruthenium will look good against the black back of your headstock, but I think the Copper will look very good. Again, its warmth will pick up on the golden hues of the inlaid Koa and Mahogany neck. To my eye, however, the Ebony buttons look the best with your guitar. So... Copper/Ebony? haha
