I recently purchased a Guild D-125, which is a dreadnought in the GAD series, all solid mahogany. It has become my favorite guitar, surpassing even my D28. I absolutely LOVE this guitar. I also have have the D125-12 version, which is the 12 string.

For all sorts of reasons -- some physical and some emotional -- I like small-body Mahogany guitars. I like the shape and I find the softer, more mellow sound just right for playing at home. My 00-15M and GS Mini get lots of attention these days. I've not let go of any of my spruce tops but those mahogany ones -- there is just something about them that keeps me coming back for yet another song.

The first time a played a Martin 000-15M I got a bad case of gas. I wound up buying one which was almost completely awesome except for nut width and string spacing. I sold the 000-15M and eventually picked up one of LA Guitar Sales Custom OM-15M with the wider nut and string spacing which is fully and completely awesome.
All mahogany is fantastic in my books.

I have a 1959 Martin 0-15. Spectacular 'hog, workhorse studio tone that never fails to please. She has qualities I wish other guitars had.
I was foolish this week and almost traded her away. I am so relieved the person I offered her to thought she was not worthy. I guess I should be altogether pleased. Come to think of it, I am. |

I was never a big Taylor fan until I bought this slightly used 2002 314ce. It was custom ordered by the previous owner. Pretty great all-arounder...

I also think there's something cool about the aesthetics of an all mahogany guitar. The way the topwood looks like it was ripped right off of a nicely built coffee table or cabinet always appealed to me. It's very earthy.
Soundwise, as everyone said, the dryness and characteristic lack of overtones make mahogany a good fingerpicker as you can really hear the richness of each individual note as opposed to having some of it lost to the natural reverb of rosewood. Rosewood in general I find to be a better strumming wood but I much prefer mahogany for fingerpicking. |

I've got one of the Guild GAD M120s and I absolutely love it. Does everything I need it to (strumming or fingerpicking) while being super comfortable.

kevmc, I am heading to Ireland in a couple of months. Any guitar shops, venues in the Cork area I should check out?
Thnx. Btw, I have a Martin 000-15M and love it. I would definitely recommend an all hog. I have also played a couple of Breedlove all hogs that were very nice and less than $500. Last edited by griff599; 03-27-2014 at 09:04 AM. |
