Default Help, Gibson pickups question

my friend just gave me a pair of Gibson USA pickups.
They come from a 1995 Les Paul Studio American.
I cannot find any identifying marks on the pickups, they have a gold cover.

How would I find out what type of Gibson pickups these are, and how do I determine which is a Neck Pickup and which is the Bridge??

any help would be great.

Thanks

Just taking an educated guess...

The pickups may not be original. The reason I say that is the LP Studio is a pretty plain Jane version of the LP designed to sell at a lower price point but be a Gibson instead of an Epiphone. Typically gold covers (and the other body parts which would need to match them) cost more money which then sort of defeats the point.

As for Bridge/Neck, you might see what the wiring looks like with the pickups oriented the way they woudl be on the guitar. The screw side of the HB is closer to the neck side and to the bridge side; when you have them oriented that way, the wires may set up towards the controls on the right (if facing the guitar). If so then the one that has wires to the right when the screws are nearest the neck would be the neck pickup and the one with the screws closest to the bridge with wires to the right would be the bridge pickup.

If the wire comes out of the middle...oh well.

Another way to take a guess might be to take a lightweight screwdriver and sort of balance it on your finger and see which pickup has a stronger magnetic field. I am pretty sure that bridge pickups may be 'hotter' most often and have the stronger field.

Someone who knows more, may well tell you all this is hooey. Just my guess at it.

Default Thank you

I will use that advice, perhaps I will be able to figure it out.
as for the pickups. I know they are Gibson pickups, because "Gibson USA" is eched on the back side of them. Other then that, I can't figure our what type they are. They came off a of a 1995 Les Paul Studio. That's all I know.
I tried to look for some sort of Identification marks but was unsuccessful.

Thank again for your advice.

The pickups are most likely a 490R for the neck and a 498t for the bridge.

I agree. I have a 1996 LP Studio that came with the 490R/498T combo. Overall, they are decent pickups, but I think they sound much better with 500k pots than the 300k pots that Gibson uses. Swapping the A2 magnets with A5's is a popular (and well recommended) modification for them.

Oddly enough, they sound much better in my SG's than my Les Pauls...even when using the same electrical components.

If they were installed at the factory by Gibson, they should have 2-conductor wiring. If they were purchased from Gibson as separate pickups, they will have 4-conductor wiring for split/parallel/series coil variations.
