Oh man. Just one after another after another.
So long, Billy Joe. Sorry we couldn’t have you around longer. RIP.

Many of you may know, but Billy Joe Shaver's son, Eddie, was an amazing guitar player who played and recorded with Billy Joe, and many others, at times. Take a listen to the Shaver "Tramp on Your Street" album and hear Eddie's guitar work throughout. Sadly, Eddie died of a heroine overdose in a hotel room in Waco, Texas on New Year's Eve 2001. It was a devastating blow to Billy Joe and many industry friends came to his side during this bad time. Todd Snider, who was close to Billy Joe and Eddie, wrote the song "Waco Moon" about Eddie's death. In 2004 a tribute concert was held in Austin to celebrate Billy Joe's 65th birthday. At the request of Billy Joe, Todd performed "Waco Moon" at the show. Every time I watch this it chokes me up.
Billy Joe had a very interesting life, tackled some demons, was open about his faith, married and divorced the same woman three times, and later married another woman two times. Take a moment and soak up the emotion of "Waco Moon." Last edited by 12barBill; 11-03-2020 at 05:41 AM. |

I just listened to a great pair of interviews that Terry Gross (Fresh Air - NPR) had with Billy Joe - one in 1994 and a second in 2005). You can probably find it on the Fresh Air website now. He was a cat with many lives!

He was on a NPR TV show with 6 songwriters(Willie, Hank Cochrane, Floyd Tilman et al) and he demonstrated how to walk across an airport terminal drunk so nobody notices. Jeez, I'd like to have that dvd. (Oh,Oh, my bad,-- looking back, I think it was Whitey Shaefer)

Slight veer. Vince told me that that some of the braces in my Pawless Mesquite Special were made from scrap left from a guitar he built for Billy Joe. I guess sort of six degrees of separation (or less).

Just follow him on Facebook. If he is still building, he's cut way back on production. Still has a website, but no info on current builds.
