Default Red Sox fans- today in 2004

Where were you today (Oct 27, 2004) when the Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years! Wow.

I was living just north of Boston at the time and I called my dad within 10 seconds of that final out. He was a lifelong fan as was my grandfather too. Lots of phone calls between father/son/mother/daughter/brother/sister in those first few minutes.

How about you?

Crying like a baby with my wife, another lifelong Sox fan. We both called our folks, it was pretty late but everyone was up!

Dru, I was cheering as hard as I could for the St. Louis Cardinals. What a brutal series...

That was nothing compared to what your boys did to us in '67, Kerbie

Not to mention '46, which was before my time.....

Great rivalry!

In Florida but bought a ticket to Boston for the parade the next day. That trip was a day and a half, but it was worth it.

Even though the Sox had a 3-0 series lead and lead 3-0 with 2 out in the 9th inning some fans still knew that the Red Sox could still blow it. My buddy said for that final out the pitcher should have just kept the ball, ran, and tackled the runner rather than risk throwing the ball away at first base .

Working in Oxford, listening to the game on WEEI. Apparently I had to leave the US for the Sox to win.

Considering the time difference, I was a wee bit bleary eyed at my desk the next day.

Would that have been Joe Castiglione announcing the game? Always like him. You just get used to a voice.

I was watching the game with my grandfather and my uncle. My grandfather made an impromptu trip down the coast in his sailboat and surprised my uncle and I. We all went out and watched the game together. Honestly, it was one of the greatest times I've ever had with my grandfather and I'll never forget it.

And soon after the game, hundreds of graves across New England were decorated with Sox caps and pennants to let the departed know that they had ‘reversed the curse!’

Best,

Rick

PS - if you’ve never seen it, the movie ‘Fever Pitch’ is a wonderful accompaniment to the event. Originally, the ending had the Red Sox losing, as always. It had to be rewritten to fit the facts.

That's a great story, Daniel.

I'm sure lots of graves were visited and lots of memories of those who were not around to witness the moment. I used to listen to Red Sox games on the radio, with lots of static, when I was a kid with my grandfather. We used to catch the Maine feed across the bay (there was no cable tv). I thought of him.

We all flew to Chicago and put Cubs memorabilia on my Uncle Jack's grave when the Cubs won. He died the year before they won and he had been a season ticket holder for almost 40 years. We even got funny looks dressed in Red Sox garb putting Cubs stuff on his grave, we even got some handshakes from some Cubs loyalists. It felt good. I feel old school Red Sox and Cubs fans are cut from a similar cloth. I remember watching Mo Vaughn crush a few over the Green Monster as a kid in the early 90's.

I'm not a huge sports fan, but the Red Sox have delivered some cherished memories for me and my family. Many others too.

I was by myself in a Mexican cantina attached to a Double Tree in outside of Tucson while on a business trip. I nearly hit the ceiling when Keith Foulke recorded the final out and let out a long series of "Woooooooooos!!!" much to the chagrin of the of the only other party in the bar. I heard them mumble, "They must not win that often." Well after that, they certainly did. As a Sox fan that was such a likeable team.

It was, of course, Joe. I used to send him a postcard from wherever I was each summer. I emailed him after game 7 of the Yankees series—and he emailed back.

I reckon I started listening to him call games in 87 or thereabouts.

Jim - so cool that you heard from Joe. Joe's voice is burned into my head. I can still hear Ned Martin and Bob Montgomery from tv from the early '80s.
