The guitars look amazing.

The garden bench seat could use a few applications of teak oil, however ...

Well, this thread has languished for a long time. It took months for the leather covers to be delivered. And then Vince Gill and Amy Grant apparently changed their minds about becoming "Ambassadors" of The Buddy Holly Educational Foundation (it changed its name from Buddy Holly Guitar Foundation). So the guitars sat in my shop for over a year.

But the story has a happy ending. These were named the "Not Fade Away" guitars. They have been appropriately placed with two longtime Buddy Holly fans whose band's first hit record 49 years ago was a cover of that song. I am pleased to announce that these two Klepper guitars have been received by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones. Special thanks to TBHEF Ambassador Waddy Wachtel, who initiated the arrangements by telling his friend Keith Richards about the work of TBHEF and the availability of these guitars. Even more special thanks to John Thomas, who arranged my commission from TBHEF.

The guitars were delivered last month when the Stones were on tour in LA. I couldn't be more pleased and proud. My thanks to TBHEF for this honor, and to Mick and Keith for accepting my guitars. The early word from them is that they "love them."

Howard,

That's quite a "feather in your cap" and richly deserved. Congratulations.

Really beautiful guitars Howard. Ha ha ! Mick n Keef ! That's fantastic !
Not what people usually think of as a "couple", but definitely deserving of the Buddy legacy.
They've been through enough ups and downs that they will probably stay "together" now, 'til death do them part.

Default A New Buddy Holly Guitar

I received a new commission last year from the Buddy Holly Educational Foundation (TBHEF.org). I'm adding to this old thread to put it in context. The latest guitar I have built for them is now complete, with photos below.

To summarize: TBHEF commissions luthiers who do vintage guitar reproductions to build copies (there is a bit of license, e.g. for truss rods and makers' logos) of Buddy's 1943 Gibson J-45, which was the guitar he mostly played when offstage, and on which he composed his songs. Buddy hand-tooled a leather cover for his J-45, which is part of the reproductions. The cover of the guitar below and its accompanying strap were made by Judy Edwards, who is the wife of former Ventures guitarist Nokie Edwards. Nokie is now one of the TBHEF "Ambassadors."

TBHEF places these guitars on long-term loan to its "Ambassadors" to use when making recordings or appearances to raise funds for TBHEF's charitable work in music education. The first series of these guitars each contained an original fret from Buddy's own guitar. Guitar historian John Thomas was instrumental in setting up TBHEF and implementing its guitar project. I remain deeply grateful to him for bringing me into the TBHEF family as a builder. Being involved in this project has been one of the occasional perks that can make the life of a luthier more satisfying.

This particular guitar will be a surprise presentation to one of TBHEF's Ambassadors, so I cannot yet reveal the name of the planned recipient, other than to say this person is a rock and roll legend who has played with many household-name performers. I will come back to this thread when I am at liberty to reveal the name--it may be some months from now.

Gorgeous guitar!

My good friend Miss Zoe McCulloch was the recipient of one of the originals and she loves the guitar.

Well done!
