Default My New Fishing Buddies

Had some company fishing this morning. They were camped where I wanted to fish so I approached making a little noise and the whole family sauntered off for a swim. They always keep the goslings between them, on land or water.

Probably not, but I have seen a feral cat hunting around this lake often.

Nice! And great picture too. Just stay far enough away. They can be quite territorial and VERY protective of their young!

Years ago, I had a dog that ran about 100 lbs. On a walk around that lake, he inadvertently got too close to a nest with eggs in it. One of the geese spread out their wings and charged him. He was sort of stunned and hid behind me.

Smart dog! A mad goose is not to be trifled with!

Yep. Geese don’t mess around. My first Border Collie thought she could herd them.

They convinced her otherwise.

A couple of years ago me and the wife were visiting her brother and his family in Denver. The parks and highway medians were full of them. I remarked that hungry folks in Denver could always eat goose. Boy did I get some dirty looks. Still not sure why, people go the rice fields in Texas and hunt them and other folks drive right by them every day!

We have a pair that lives on our land by the river. Our neighbors have a pair also. There are thousands in the neighborhood.

Saw them again this morning, still have all 4 goslings. They were at the back end of the lake where it is mucked in with grass and moss so I stayed about 10-15 yards away and they seemed content at that.

The fish were acting weird. Can't count how many strikes I got within 2 feet of the shore. Decent sized fish. I would just about get to where I would pull the lure out of the water and one would charge out from the grass mat and slam the lure. Hoping for storms tonight to break up the weed mats.

Harry, Harry, Harry ,,, can you hear yourself ?

Haven’t you got some guitars and mandolins n stuff to play with at home ? Cosy ? In the dry ?

I KNOW you have to make it home for Friday’s supermarket sweep .

Well, fishing only takes up the dawn to mid-morning time frame unless I travel to do it. Plenty of time for guitars, mandolins, dog, and the lonely widder wimens.

In my teens and twenties, my whole year revolved around fishing. This is the first year in decades when I could revisit that activity and I find I enjoy it now even more than I did before.

They can be aggressive to protect their own. Great story.
